Hi everyone,

After ghosting these forums for several months, I finally have something to ask.

I have just been offered a job teaching IB English part-time. The details are:

1 year contract (as long as were both happy with your work we can renew it)
20 hrs/week
4 daily groups (around 20 students per class)
4 hours of tutoring per week
$12,500 /month
One month (without payment) vacation in July.
Two paid weeks in December
One paid week in March
Benetifs (health insurance IMSS, infonativ)
Visa
Access to all school fitness programs and libraries.
The option to become a full-time teacher (that would include an 8 :00 5 :00 schedule, vales and caja de ahorro, 12 months paid, an office, and a round-trip plane ticket per year to your hometown).

Any advice or suggestions? I appreciate it.

The job offer sounds fine.

But be prepared for teaching fresa Mexican kids in a colegio!

Also be sure to do some research on Tampico... It's not a "tourist" town and it's an industrial port city of 300,000.

Do any of you seasoned vets know anything about infonavit? Also, about how much in taxes will come out of my paycheck each month?

Infonavit - Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores, is a benefit given to all workers in Mexico by which the employer pays into a fund on behalf of the employee. This fund grows, and subject to some conditions of time and years of employment, the worker will be entitled to one of two types of government loan for the purchase or remodelation of a property.

The money in the fund doesn't equal the loanable amount, but is merely a basis for calculating the amount you could borrow. Having taken out a loan, which is at a more favorable rate that a normal mortgage, the payments are deducted from your monthly salary.

INFONOVIT is great if you plan on staying for a while and want to buy a house.

Expect about 25% off the top for tax Mad

And there's a 16% sales tax as well Shocked

But you won't notice that as much as it's included in the sticker price of just about everything. Makes things easier when shopping for groceries at Wal-Mart Cool

How much do you all pay for a house/apartment? I've done a ton of research and I think its reasonable to get something for 3000 pesos a month without a problem. However, my family (namely mother and grandmother) found out about this last night and all chaos broke loose. They are convinced that I will be sleeping in a cardboard fridge box and later be abducted by a drug cartel. Funny thing is, they said almost the same thing when I joined the Air Force 7 years ago.

Anyway, thats another story.

I paid off my car last week just so I could bring it with me. Do you all have any experience with insurance?

Gracias!
Rachel

Don't listen to all the naysayers, bring the car it is definitely an advantage! Yes, there is a lot of traffic, but the alternative, public transport, is horrendous, unless you like travelling like a pig going to market. Make sure you will have an offroad place to park it though. Insurance starts around $5000 MX per year for a supermini, gas is around $7-8MX per liter, tenencia (useless annual tax) depends on the car and its age but starts around $1600 for a supermini.

Sweet. I already hate taking public transportation in the US because people seem to stare. I give them this look like "If you mess with me I'll cut you". So far it has worked..

I did some prelim research on companies. What company do you guys know the most about/is the most reputable. From what I found, 1 year coverage on my 05 Cobalt is about $500 USD.
HDI Seguros Extended Coverage
June 4 10-June3,11

Coverage for all the normals, plus vandalism and theft.
This policy will pay medical expenses, at $5,000 USD per person / $25,000 USD per accident, of the driver and occupants of the vehicle in Mexico for injuries sustained in a covered accident. Plus roadside assistance and car rental. Civil Liability: This coverage protects you in the event you cause bodily injury or property damage to third parties. Coverage is $150,000 USD combined single limit.

Deductibles are 500 for accidents 1000 for theft. Covers partial and total theft.

gracias!
rachel

p.s. are you still paying US income tax too?

If it is a serious IB program, then yes, youll have fresa kids, but motivated fresa kids, generally speaking. IMHO, motivated students from any social class are a joy to teach. The job offer is not bad, esp. if you plan to teach only a couple of years there and/or have the option for a better contract if you decide to stay.

My car insurance is GNP. I don't know whether they're better or worse than the rest but I can tell you I sure appreciated the personal touch in their Civil Liability coverage. When I had an accident, the lawyer stayed with me all day and evening until 9:00 pm when they finally let me leave the delegacin, and then gave me a ride part of the way home.

An advantage we really appreciate over the way auto insurance works at home is that the price doesn't depend on past claims. Having an accident doesn't make it more expensive next year.
