Hi all,

I have a question regarding the CELTA application for ILA....one of the sentences, "When I arrived at the station, the train left." I have really no idea what the tense is for left (it's not the simple past). Anyways, hope someone can help.....

Why do you say it's not the simple past?

I leave - present
I left - simple past

I arrive - present
I arrived - simple past

i really don't know why it's not the simple past....i submitted it, and they responded with 2 errors I made on it....this was one of them...the other i fixed.

it really makes no sense to me...maybe they're trying to say that the train is leaving in the present....as if you are arriving, and the train is just starting to leave, not already left or about to leave....

Are you sure the sentence isn't "when i arrived at the station, the train had already left"? I know that's what they use at the school I work at. In that case it's the past perfect, to show the train left before you arrived.

I marked this as simple past on my app and it was fine. That IS the simple past form so it may have been a mistake on their part.

I'm actually surprised they told you how many/what was incorrect. No one said a thing about my application during/before my telephone interview. By the way, when are you planning to do your CELTA course at ILA?

@Nash, i'm planning on taking the May 11 course in HCMC...assuming that i'm accepted into the course....pretty excited for it...even though everyone says that it's the worst 4 weeks of your life....
