US varsity students on visit to Education City
A total of 23 students from two leading US universities the University of San Diego and the University of Maryland, are in Qatar to participate in the Young Professionals Institute at Qatar Foundation, a spokesperson said. The students will spend a week exploring Qatari culture and getting to know the workings of Education City before meeting students from the six branch campuses here at a symposium. The symposium will address several topics including independent living and the role of family in the lives of Arab students.
The students will also learn about Arab students experiences in universities providing American programmes, and they will explore and analyse the essential factors that contribute to the success of Education City. University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences associate professor and department chair Cheryl Getz said: Visiting Education City is a tremendous opportunity for our graduate students to gain knowledge and increase their awareness about higher education in a global context. Getz said that as future leaders the students will benefit greatly from engaging with other successful and innovative educators.
This model collaboration is a powerful way to contribute to existing research and scholarship to advance student success, the official added.
Before the symposium which will take place on January 20, the students will visit several of Qatars landmarks, including the Museum of Islamic Art, Al Jazeera Channel and Souq Waqif, to acquaint themselves with the country, its history and some of its modern practices.
Preceding the symposium on the 18 and 19, there will be a casual discussion with students at universities in Qatar, including Qatar University and the College of the North Atlantic, in preparation for the symposium. The Young Professionals Institute is organised by the Office of Faculty and Student Services (OFSS), part of the Education Division at Qatar Foundation.
OFSS aims to increase understanding of rigorous educational practices in culturally diverse settings, and to refine ideas of student leadership in a way that can be applied at universities in Education City.
OFSS works mainly in recruiting motivated and talented students to Education City and cultivating a sense of community and identity among the students that can help them unlock their potential. It also offers career services and student employment opportunities that prepare students for meaningful and successful vocations. The deeper students are involved in their learning, the more likely they are to stick with their academic work to completion and to fully benefit from their university education, Qatar Foundation assistant vice president for Education Dr Dennis Robert said. |

QF achieves 50% Qatarisation target: Hammadi
DOHA QATAR Foundation (QF) has achieved the 50 percent Qatarisation target two years ahead of schedule, the foundations Human Resources Executive Director Hassan al Hammadi said on Sunday.
The Foundation achieved the target at the end of last year though it had time till 2011, Hammadi told Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of Trainee Recognition Ceremony at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCU-Q). He held it up as proof of success of the national development drive. New targets of Qatarisation will be set on the basis of success achieved so far, he said, reminding 100 percent Qatarisation is the ultimate goal of Qatar Foundation.
We (still) need to hire foreign hands for training and development.
Since training and development are necessary in various fields, hundred percent Qatarisation will have to wait for some more years, he said.
Hammadi asserted that various national development programmes organised by QF were bearing fruits. Schemes like New Competency Framework, Aeddad Programme, Leading University Scheme and Qatar Career Fair have enabled recruitment of highly qualified Qataris to Qatar Foundation. National Development Learning and Development Head Julian King said At present we have 195 Qataris undergoing training at various levels. We have identified the individual needs and developed tailor-made career development programmes for each individual. |

THE European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) has opened the EADS Competence Centre of Qatar (EADS CCQ), an advanced centre for training, research and development at the Qatar Science & Technology Park.EADS CCQ specialises in aeronautic maintenance activities and will focus on research and development programmes in co-operation with universities and institutes in the country, the GCC region and abroad as well as Qatar Foundations academic partners.EADS CCQ will host a joint venture with the French Welding Institute Institute de Soudure to deliver training and certification programmes for Non-Destructive Testing Technologies (NDT).
The centre will also propose, in association with Airbus, certified courses and diplomas in aircraft maintenance and other aeronautical related trainings.
EADS is among the first international companies to participate in the establishment and expansion of QSTP by investing in setting up EADS Competence Centre, which will be a platform of excellence in the region in its fields of activities. EADS CCQ is managed by highly qualified and experienced engineers and staff dedicated to meet all customers requirements.QSTP is part of Qatar Foundations strategy and vision to develop high-tech capabilities and spur human development in Qatar by fostering education, science and community initiatives for the country. The science park supports local and international companies to establish research centres and collaborate with the universities in Qatar Foundation. EADS said it is willing to assist Qatar Foundation in achieving its vision.
The establishment of the EADS Competence Centre of Qatar is an additional materialisation of the long lasting and trustful co-operation existing between EADS and the State of Qatar, said Bertrand Deyzac, Chairman of EADS CCQ.The EADS Competence Centre of Qatar was jointly inaugurated by Jean-Pierre Talamoni, EADS International chief executive officer, and Qatar Airways chief executive officer, Akbar al-Baker.Talamoni said the centre at QSTP would work in close co-operation with Qatari universities and give priority to national students.

All flash... smoke and mirrors...
There are no students to support all of these. But, they are managing to suck up lots of those petrodollars.
