I know this isnt the best place for this type of question. I have googled this but i still havent been able to fix my problem.

Every time I plug in my internet cable, I have internet access for about 10 seconds, then my computer slows down to the point where it cant be used. It basically freezes.

From what I have seen on the internet, it seems like i need to "upgrade my firmware" but I am not exactly sure what I have to download to get my computer to work in this country.

Has anyone else had this problem?

The computer probably has a virus.

Is it a school supplied computer ?

Start with:
Computer needs more memory
OS is out of date
Network card is not compatible
Connection settings need to be tweaked

Then try:
Browser is out of date/infected
Virus
Cable has a short/loose connection (Will still work with up to 6 of 8 but slow)
Pagefile is not set correctly
Registry is corrupt
Registry is bloated
Drive(s) is(are) fragmented
Censors are playing with you
ISP is trash
(School/Local?) Server is overloaded

The list goes on and on, could be any number of things.

The computer is less than a year old, it has windows vista, and i am able to get a weak wireless signal that works when it wants to work (usually less than an hour at a time).

The only problem happens when I try to plug in using a cable. I have tried two different cables and the both have had the same result. There is an internet connection for a few seconds, then the computer totally freezes. As soon as I unplug the cable, everything is back to normal.

This is the only country where Ive had an issue like this.

I bought the computer in Korea. Is it an incompatibility issue? If it is, how do i fix it? Ive already had people on campus look at it but no one has been able to get it to work. I think I am not the only one having this problem, I heard similar things from some of the other teachers.

If it is a virus, you will have problems with or without being connected to the internet.

If it is a laptop, take it to a coffee shop with wireless access. See if you experience the same thing.

Where in China are you?

My Modem/Router died this week, I just got it replaced ( China Telcom/China Net fixed and replaced it all for free ).

After that I noticed a lot of small problems I had been having went away. I had assumed the problems were just normal conditions here in China. If you get stumped, check your modem/router. Odds are its some old thing the school pass down to you. Mine was over 5 years old, not that I would ever know...
