That reminds me 2 years back, just before summer break our off-shore
school organized a soccer tournament and invited all the teams from the
nearby towns. Before the actual date we Fts wanted our field to be in tip top shape. We made sure the local PE dept would powder in the lines and we sort of walked over the field to pick up stones and such so that it would be ready. by chance we asked our Chinese liason teacher to come as well and he was quite supportive of what we were doing.
We came across 2 concrete pieces right in front of the goals, about
10 yards out in front, a little too high above grass root line. The Fts decided it was hazzardous if someone should fall in the heat of the game and has his head meet the concrete. That would not be just a scratch on
the skin. We decided we should dig them up for safety reasons. The Liason teacher was all supportive and he even went to the gardener for shovels and things so we can do the job.
We were feeling proud that Fts and locals can team up to solve a problem.
Next day the first thing we found out was the Liason teacher got a screaming lecture from the PE dept and even the gardener was not spared
of their fury. For whatever reason the big chunks of concrete were put there for a purpose that none of us could imagine. Of course the Fts were
spared from the lecture. The bottom line was the Liason was held responsible and we just joked and laughed at him and he laughed too that he didn't know the purpose of the stones.
There were no bad consequences as we all thought we did the right thing trying to make the school safe for all. So, the moral is use your liason person or the go between person or Chinese helper as much as possible to prevent possible Volcanic Fireworks with the authorities.
We were told later it took them a few thousand rmb's to replace the concrete markers, a little deeper below ground than they were and to fix the sprinkler pipe we broke while digging. Get to know your contact in the school and it would save a lot of headaches and frustrations. |
