See I wanted to be placed with my job as close to Nagoya as possible because of my boyfriend who lives there. BUT I was advised not to use that as a reason to why i want to get placed in a specific area because that area may not be available and I wanted to HAVE a job in Japan. If you limit yourself to only one place or only big cities, you may not even get a placement. They usually give the more popular places to experienced people first. I may have not been placed close to Nagoya, but since I am getting experience AND studying Japanese, I have a better chance of transfering to where i want to go next year if I get a new contract. So I am not angry being far away from my boyfriend, but I AM happy to have a job IN Japan and teaching some amazing kids and getting experience which is way more important.

Lying is never a good idea in Japan. Especially if you are expecting to stay for a long period of time. You should just keep your options open and take what they give you. Your new, You probably don't know the language OR culture very well.

The way i see it, it's none of our bloody business why the OP wants to go to Osaka, and I find the insistence on knowing his reasons to be confusing at best, and slightly sinister at worst.

My own approach, were I lucky enough to get a job offer in Japan, would be to take whatever they were willing to offer, even if it was a placement in some Godforsaken dying town in Iwate-ken.

After all, Japan isn't that big, and with the Shinkansen and all, an occasional weekend in Osaka wouldn't be out of the question.

Being in-country would put me closer to the gaijin teacher grapevine, and I would spend my off-hours looking for a place to land when my initial contract was up. (In my case, I'd look for something within an hour's train ride from Tokyo.)

By the way, unless you're planning to join the yakuza as an apprentice chinpira, I can't imagine anything that is so hush-hush that you couldn't tell the truth.

OP, this is coming from someone who hasn't taught in Japan (YET! 2 more weeks!), but why not live out in the Inaka for a year, get some teaching experience, work on your Japanese, then look for a position in Osaka the next year? You could look at your first year as a year of preparation before you make the big move to Osaka. I'm sure Osaka would be much more enjoyable after being able to speak some Japanese and having some teaching experience.

Regardless, I strongly recommend you stay away from lying, especially in an interview. In my experience, people who lie in the interview are almost always found out.

For the Osaka ben. And a chance to do some stand up and eventually form a manzai duo. Then you use that as a springboard to some tarento gigs and a spot in the gallery on variety shows. A couple pop albums later and you retire to occasional guest appearances on food shows and fashion spreads in luxury goods magazines. It all starts in Osaka.
