most "security guards" spend their time sleeping and smoking ciggs... china is a pretty safe place. i have never felt uncomfortable here, even when the guard is asleep with a lit cigg in hand. |

To be honest I usually feel much safer here than in the US. At least in China the random crazy attacker will probably be coming with a knife rather than a high-powered rifle. These random acts of 'crazy job person' can happen anywhere, but really, I don't think it's worth worrying about all that much. |

lets look at the numbers. US: 308 million people. China 1 billion 400 million people. Sounds bad, but even those 4 school attacks aren't even a drop in the bucket compared to China's population. Needle in a haystack for sure. |

It doesn't matter where you are, "random" means just that. One never knows. It's easy to say "don't worry about it", but it really doesn't do any good to dwell on it. Just keep on keepin' on. |

The university here is very safe. I went off-campus to the Catholic Cathedral 石室 on 56 Yi De Lu 一得路 and got pickpocketed of my electronic dictionary (a new one costa over Y1000). |

I feel safe enough...the attacks are horrendous but I don't think there's any point in living in fear. We have no security of any description at our language school but if the 'guards' at my apartment building are anything to go by we're not missing much. |

In Nanning I haven't seen any change to campus security since the recent incidents. It is as laid back as ever. My students seem hardly aware of the recent incidents and I don't see any change in parents behaviour taking children too or from school. The vast majority of kids in Nanning still travel independently by bus or biccycle.
The whole thing seems to me to be a media circus. I have never felt in any danger on a Chinese campus and only very rarely in the street. Even after six years that is still a refreshing change from Britain. |
