Hi,
My fianc & I may be moving to Putian City to teach later this year. We've done our research & it seems like a nice enough place, but a couple of Chinese people that we know have said that it is a dangerous place to go to. I'm wondering, is this true? I'm sure every place we go to will have it's risks, but is Putian riskier than most? We have already been offered jobs there, including an apartment, bills paid for... so we really want to go there, but not at the risk of our safety. Any advice would be much appreciated, especially from those who have visited/lived there before.
Thanks. |

In the past I worked in Putian for a year and would not want to work there again but not because it is particularly dangerous. There are far more interesting and competent places to work at in China than Putian which is famous for its fake shoes but not really much else.If you are desperate for a job or have personal reasons for wanting to work there then it is suitable otherwise my advice is give it a miss |

Im sure someone will disagree with me...but in my experience, Chinese people say everything is dangerous. Going to a bar - dangerous. Taking a bus - dangerous. Fake money - everywhere. Thieves - Everywhere. In almost 3 years in China I have experienced none of the above ... far more likely to be a victim of crime at home I reckon |

Since writing my previous posting here this morning I have unfortunately learnt that a Chinese teacher at Putian University was murdered this morning (not by a student or staff but by a relative). This does not mean Putian is more dangerous than anywhere else but it is not a good place either. Chinese students almost anywhere that I have taught them are a good bunch including Putian and like almost anywhere else in China the problem is the management |

I strongly agree with the above poster. Chinese are by and large nice people but many live in a near constant state of fear and see "danger" everywhere. Some of it might be because a lot of "bad" news is suppressed so folks use an informal system of rumor and innuendo to keep up with current events. There's a road leading to my school that has been branded as "dangerous" and some of my colleagues were shocked to hear I walk it, quite frequently alone, late at night. I grow weary of EVERYTHING being called "not safe" or "dangerous." |
