Has anyone else living in Mongolia noticed a recent increase in violence toward foreigners here? I've been here for a long time, and it seems that I've been hearing about it more often, lately.
I heard a report that a foreign consulate was severely beaten by a group of Mongolians a couple weeks ago only because he's foreign. A few days ago two of my friends were attacked in the street while walking home. Their attackers didn't try to steal anything, they just gave them a few bruises and went on their way. The attack was clearly to attempt to intimidate them. Many of my friends have mentioned recently being intentionally pushed on the sidewalk, hit by passersby, and otherwise minorly assaulted and harassed.
I've been living here for a long time, and I've been verbally harassed and heckled on the street for being a foreigner, but not randomly attacked (knock on wood).
Is there an upward trend taking place? |
