A very high percentage of people in my wife's old housing compound had lymphoma. The sad part about this was that they all thought they were 'catching' it from each other, apparently unaware that lymphoma is a form of cancer and that they were probably being exposed to some really nasty chemicals in their water or something along those lines. |

One of my schools office boys was sent to fix the water pump in my house for the umpteenth time. Being neither an electricitan nor a plumber he fried himself on a live wire because he forgot to turn off the mains. He lived though, unlike my prospects within the school after I berated the centre manager for sending the school driver and her assistant instead of medical assistance. Good thing I had a new job lined up.
I saw a machete attack last week. The guy was thrown down a flight of stairs the butchered in front of the bar (roadside shack) my friends and I were sitting in. He also lived but he's a hand and a few pints of blood lighter than he once was. Hands down the most disturbing thing I have ever seen.
All the makeshift stables that spring up around Jakarta during Idul Adah are quite a sight. I refused to believe that the goats were to be slaughtered until I walked outside my house and saw a cleric from the mosque next door grinning from ear to ear while hacking the head off a goat. "Selamat Idul Adah!! Mau sidikit kambing? Enak bangat!!!" I polietly declined the offer of goat and went to Carita instead. |
