Hello! This is my first real post, so I'm enjoying exploring the site.
I'm currently living in St. Petersburg and am looking at the possibility of being here through next summer. I have a couple possibilities for teaching (English), but I have some questions.
Do any of you have recommendations for:
1. Teaching positions in St. Petersburg. I'm seeing a lot of scattered information and more horror stories than I'd like to, and it would be great to have a couple solid recommendations. I have two possibilities already, but in the multitude of counselors there is wisdom!
2. The best way to pursue private lessons, what to charge, etc. I'm in the middle of getting my TEFL certificate, have experience teaching English and extensive experience teaching (piano), and I'm a native English speaker (American).
3. Speaking of a TEFL certificate, which online programs are better than others? I will definitely speak with potential employers, as their opinion is of course most important, but in general is there at least a general consensus?
4. Where/how I could find a good private Russian tutor. The quality, and therefore expense, would depend on the answer to No. 1. I'd also certainly be willing to go for some form of barter--Russian for English or something else.
5. Good ways to find somewhere to live, again dependent on the first couple. I'd preferably like to live by myself, but again, I'd definitely be willing to try another barter--English for a place to stay perhaps.
6. This is completely a shot in the dark, but I'm an accomplished amateur pianist--are there any suggestions on how I can parlay that into anything (teaching, performing, accompanying)?
Thanks so much! I'm excited to try to work this out--I love St. Petersburg and I need to get my Russian passable and maybe into fluency. Please feel free to send me a PM or just reply here. |

1. www.visarus.co.uk is very much a St Petersburg based web site. People are likely to give you detailed advice there.
2. As question 1.
3. Employers are usually unimpressed by online programs, although I guess given your previous experience it might at least give you some useful knowledge for your own practice. I do not understand your point, however, as in q.2 you say that you are in the middle of a TEFL certificate anyway.
4. See q.1.
5. Ditto.
6. I'll play it, you'll say it? (Sorry.) |
