'I was born and raised in Virginia.' Is that a cow talking? Or a plant?

And what about 'child-rearing'? Too agricultural sounding?

I thought crops were grown? Let's grow children too!

Screw it - let's not raise any more issues. Let's raze 'em instead!

A peeve from the ignorant violent masses: 'To raise a city to the ground'.

Betcha didn't pay too much attention to the quotes. This was the response that I received from an RP a$$hole from Merry Ol' England when I first met way back in saudi and asked him where he was "raised" in England.

When somebody starts his sentence with "To tell you the truth ....", [/i[i]]"Quite frankly, ......", [i]"To be perfectly honest ..... ", you can be sure that what you hear next is a gross lie.

And when someone says, "Let me be perfectly clear .... " (or of such ilk), you can bet what comes out is anything but !

After hearing such insipid and inane expressions so often, I have given up on listening to/watching politicians on TV to save the TV from having my fist plough through the screen.

Saw the quotation marks but didn't understand why they were used. As far as I am concerned children are 'raised' in England too, whatever your chap in Saudi Arabia may have you believe. Children are even bred too, as in 'I was born and bred in Liverpool'. But your man wouldn't use that if he wants to be snobby... it's a matter of good breeding!

'To harass'. Stress placement makes for a peeve of great annoyance.

I haven't posted anything for a while, so I needed to gripe about SOMETHING, spiral78. No offense.

Heh heh! No, of course I'm not. Just trying to provoke the same peevement in others which I experience when my spelling in assumed to be wrong and then corrected, even on this forum. For example, google 'travelling' and more than a few on-line dictionaries (which seem to be mainly US websites) will claim that this is a British variant, and some posters on forums even say it is just wrong.

When EFL teachers sometimes do this, that is truly disappointing, JohnTpartee, as it shows a troubling lack of awareness. Therefore I sympathise with your feelings and hope that you'll join me in my peevement.
