Dear NCTBA,

If people spoke only about what they knew to be true, a vast silence would descend upon the earth.

And that might be really quite nice.

Of course, it would also mean that I'd have to shut up. Crying or Very sad

Regards,
John

Dear NCTBA,

No contracts - I do my own wet work. Why pay someone to do something so enjoyable? Very Happy

But no worries - you're not on the list.

Regards,
John

Do you do hits on people who use pepper peevy phrases through their speech? How much to put a hit a someone who says 'talk to the hands...'?

Harass. Needs to be pronounced correctly, as in the non-peevey way not normally heard on TV cop shows...

Grrr!

Dear Sashadroogie,

"How much to put a hit a someone who says 'talk to the hands...'?"

No charge - that's pro bono.

I hate the term "making love". 99.99% of the people who say that don't mean it. They are scratching an itch. It's particularly galling when I hear someone say that they made love with a prostitute. Call it having sex.

That's a peeve?

Interestingly, going back to swear words, all the crude words for 'making love' are transitive whereas all the euphemisms are not - and not just in English, but in many, many languages.

Just a shared insight, not a peeve either, really.

I use Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow regularly, and it is a truly bepeeving experience on so many levels, including linguistically dubious signage. But though peeved, even I wouldn't quite as worked up about it as these dudes do in this 'controversial' video game:

Have you ever seen Chinglish? I've never seen the dubious Russian, but some of the Chinese stuff will amaze and astound even the most jaded world traveller. Look at "more Chinglish pics" in "China (Off-Topic)".

But has it ever made you 'go postal'? (There is a peculiarly US phrase and phenomenon - why do US posties get so peeved? All that rain sleet and hail, or whatever?)

No, never makes me go postal. I worked in a mail room one time, and it was mostly the gruelling repetition that got to me. Sorting mail was the worst. I'd stand there going through these piles of envelopes for what seemed like hours, look at my watch and ten minutes had passed. The days were just interminable. Couldn't imagine doing that for twenty years to get a pension.

The U.S. Post System (USPS) was a large employer of U.S. vets after 'Nam. One of the reasons that John has never "gone postal" is that he made the logical choice to "go expat"...Very Happy
