Don't even DREAM of going to Al Musanna College of Technology. The students are disrespectful and have all the power over teachers in the classroom, many of the teachers are walking zombies as they know they make no difference and that's the only way they can cope, and morale is so low it needs to be scraped off the floor. And one other thing--there is a plethora of backstabbers at ACT. You never know who will turn on you when it comes to the westerners. There are a couple of teachers there from central Europe, and they're cool. They are a welcome sight as they have passion for teaching in a place that sorely lacks it. I'd trust those folks. But I wouldn't trust the grub worms, the drunks, the morons from the USA and Canada. No way. Unfortunately, the dean, a person who is sadly incompetent at running an English department and should be mercifully shown the door, allows it all to happen. The backstabbing. The teachers coming to work drunk. The morons whose materials are filled with errors because they don't know better and don't care to know better.

Just avoid Al Musannah. Your career will thank you. And so will your passion for teaching.

A pity, Hawk? What are you talking about, you walking Bahwan billboard, you? I'll assume you're simply being facetious.
Every time a teacher does a runner, he/she must be replaced. That means more income for the likes of you, the agency/recruiter. Enough of the crocodile tears, man. Agencies like Bahwan LOVE runners and quitters, meaning they REALLY love Al Musanna College. |

Requiring a three-month notice/three month salary if one needs to get out fast doesn't help. It actually encourages running. When you come to a place like Al Musanna College of Technology, see how it's run, and decide within a month or two it's not worth your while, kudos to you. You should be applauded if you leave the hopeless mess.
You guys really crack me up at times. The runner/quitter will be held up as a pariah while drunks and morons are tolerated at these places. And did I mention most of the 'newbies' aren't given an interview nor are their references checked?

As I said before, a key indicator of bad employers are those that will accept very short notifications. Any employer in the Gulf that allows its faculty to decamp in 1 to 3 months rather than the normal 6 months or one full semester is certain to be just as you describe.
All the recruiter jobs in Oman are and have been for a long time, bottom feeders jobs. There is little vetting which means that half or more of the staff and management will be just what you are describing.
If you want to work at place that is more professional, you must provide decent credentials, be able to do a sensible interview, and apply to the places that give a standard contract that allows a professional environment where teachers don't leave in the middle of semesters because their knickers are in a twist.

I am curious about this comment , can anyone, currently, working in the Gulf, tell us if they must give a full semester notice to leave?

We discussed this very topic in the last few months on the board and the current employees of various universities in the Gulf confirmed that it is still as I said. (there were no examples of less except from recruiters)

VS would this entail simply searching for universities in Oman and applying direct?
Also, I just got a request from TATI for a scanned image of my passport - is that standard practice? |

TATI is a legitimate recruiter so providing copies of the passport is standard. (they are not selling the info.... and it is necessary for them to start the employment procedures.) That said, don't send it unless you plan to accept the job because their starting a visa application for you would block you from taking a job with anyone else.
The reality is that at this point in the year, there may not be many direct hire jobs left. SQU would be highly unlikely. One option may be the University of Nizwa.

I'm presuming an acceptance of an offer before they would request a scanned copy of your passport. But then perhaps with these recruiters I shouldn't make too many presumptions.
