I know that the death of the UAE's foundation courses has been announced before, but this recent article from The National appears to try to put a little meat on the idea.

In my opinion, there won't be much progress on this issue until the poor quality of teaching in the schools is addressed. Even then, they'd probably still have to run some sort of 'pre-university' course at the schools, where they would be cheaper to run.

So should I be worried that my 12-year-long career in teaching English and Math to freshers will be coming to an end soon? Somehow, I don't think so.

Nothing will change unless the ADEC program currently at K-3rd grade is continued and strengthened. Anyone who has been involved in Gulf education over the years knows that this is the only answer. But, the countries have to do it. That means that it may take about 8-10 years to really see the effect.

Won't that be just the time that you are ready to retire Mr R?

Indeed it would be, VS. In fact, I'm just about ready to be retired now, but the pension pot needs topping up. And the kids need to finish college, too!

I wish I could just tell them to get a job, VS, but my two dithering (but delightful!) daughters have other plans, including studying to become a teacher! Needless to say, I have set them straight on that one, but the other alternative that's popped up, doing a doctorate, fills me with even more fear.

Get a job? Oh, if ONLY!!
