I notice a prevailing theme with many expatriates a disatisfaction with their own culture. I know for myself to be a middle-aged, single guy in New Zealand or Australia is not that great.
Also somebody mentioned that office politics and onerous colleagues that can make the work horrible and ultimately not worth it.
I know for myself that asia is an escape from aspects of western culture I dislike. I'm not saying that asia is not without its little challenges- like my neighbour last night- deciding to to cobble shoes loudly and move furniture about at midnight or the funeral home - that broadcasts laments for 11 hours that sounds like a cross between Tom Waits and a cat being strangled.
Just interested in the reasons why you all got out.- realize that many don't feel this way and really look forward to going back but i think there are a sizeable number-who will choose to live most if not all of there lives in asia.

And "Chinese music under banyan trees," especially for those in Fuzhou; the "city of banyan trees."

Well, I may be out of left field here, but I think it may have something to do with the acceptance they get from the local ladies.

Here's my top ten reasons for living in Asia:
1. no temperamental attitudes to deal with
2. essentials aren't exorbitantly overpriced, housing, dental work,
3. easier to get around in big cities
4. people are more approachable, laid back (as a foreigner)
5. consumerism isn't as rampant here as it is in N.A.
6. milder and shorter winters (than in Canada)
7. food (variety and availability)
8. low or no taxes, especially sin taxes (on alcohol and cigarettes)
9. higher standard of living (for foreigners)
10. job hunter's market

That's probably not the main reason they come here, but it's certainly one of the main reasons they stay here.

I'm a bit of a loner and I like living away from western society. I feel like not constantly being bombarded by ads and corporate products has made me think more clearly and simply. I hate driving and I greatly enjoy the fact that it is generally practical to get around Chinese cities without owning a car, and if I need to use a taxi, it is somewhat affordable. I love the food and the women are both beautiful and friendly.

You are living in the same china as me right? Even graffiti here is adverts.

As for me, I am not really escaping, just checking out something different. After getting a degree in Chinese it seemed logical to put into use the language and check if what I learned of culture, ect was correct. Would really enjoy stooping it with a 40 every now and again.
