Is there minimum wage 6 euros a hour ? That is not much different to the UK at 5.80 a hour. How much is tax and national insurance (equivalent ) in spain ?

UK is one of the few countries in Europe which sets the minimum wage on an hourly basis, in most other countries it's done on a monthly basis. Spain's effective hourly minimum is about 3.65. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_wages_in_Europe

Income tax, I think the tax free amount is around 3,500 euro per year. After that you'll pay 24% on any income up to 18,000. Beyond that, working as an English teacher you won't need to worry Laughing but it's 28% on the next 16k, 27% on the next 20k and 43% above that. VAT will shortly rise to 18% and is either 4% or 8% on food items.

That is very depressing indeed. 3.65 a hour. Yikes ! I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean by an extra 35-40 hours unpaid a week. Surely the schools aren't open for much more than 30 hours ?! It is probably better if you just write everything I need to know about working in Spain. Terms and conditions working practices and so on. It sounds scandalous !

Thanks a lot for your advice. Maybe someone could add the cost of renting too. Sorry if this is asking a lot.

Cheers SAM

My husbands contract is for 28-30hrs per week. Which is full-time, because of new students this term he is working the above hours per week. Our school works Sat mornings too. You can be working a bit in the morning afternoon and finish at 9 or 10 at night. It is not like the UK, but the weather is good , 35 c at the moment. In an ideal world you should get O/T pay doesnt always happen.

Did you manage to do a search on here, there are threads about the cost of living etc in Spain? Try British expats.com?? there is a Spanish forum for general info.
Have a google for renting in Spain. There is REMAX, ERA . They are expensive though. Spanish Yellow pages too. If you dont want the popular areas e.g Barcelona, Madrid & the Costas rent is much cheaper. Inland and northern Spain.

It is, on the whole, a good life.

Be positive

good luck Smile

Thanks a lot Microbabe.

I have typed in cost of living in Spain in the search engine on this site but that is too long so no good. I will have a look at the other sites you mentioned.
