Not in Saudi, but this thread is awesome!
True story: I had a rather frugal, ahem, roomie in college. We once went out to eat and he had fries which he didn't want to finish. He asked me if I wanted them and, being a fat man, I said of course. He proceeded to ask me for 50 cents to help cover the fries' cost. I, obviously, declined. |

Leonard Cohen singing a light-hearted calypso about hawking his ass on a Trinidadian street corner to visiting US soldiers on R + R? I would kill to hear it...
It's Rum & Coca Cola I tell ya!
"If you ever go down Trinidad
They make you feel so very glad...
Rum and Coca-Cola
Rum and Coca-Cola
Workin' for the Yankee dollar..."
Aaaaaaahhhhhh....man, it's been a while. |
A continued diversion from the topic of frugality a la Saudi, sorry, but if you'll allow a clarification:
here's the story on that song (calypso):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rum_and_Coca-Cola
...a tale of litigation and, eventually, vindication of sorts for the Trinidadian composers:
" 'Rum and Coca-Cola' is the title of a popular calypso. Originally composed by Lord Invader (a calypsonian from Trinidad) and Lionel Belasco, it was copyrighted in the United States by entertainer Morey Amsterdam and became a huge hit (the top single of 1945 in the United States) for the Andrews Sisters, spending ten weeks at the top of Billboard's U.S. Pop Singles chart.[1]..."
and
"After the release of the Andrews Sisters' version of 'Rum and Coca-Cola', Belasco and Lord Invader sued for copyright infringement of the song's music and lyrics, respectively. In 1948, after years of litigation, both plaintiffs won their cases, with Lord Invader receiving an award of $150,000 in owed royalties. However, Morey Amsterdam was allowed to retain copyright to the song.[2]..."
and
Cuffs is right, Cohen was not anywhere near the composing end of things:
"Leonard Cohen sometimes quoted a line from the song in live performances of his song Field Commander Cohen. A version is available on the live album of the same name released in 2000..." |

In that case, sauditeacher, I'm in the curious position of being proved correct while standing corrected.
Have you heard 'Hill & Gully Ride' by Lord Composer & the Silver Seas? Another great calypso tune with sexual undertones peeking out from beneath its grass skirt. Ah shit, wrong ocean, right? |
