Do I have any regrets that I spent so much of my adult life TEFLing in barbarous parts of the World ?

I wouldn't say easy to earn a good living. It takes work.

You can, eventually, make a good living in lots of places in Mexico. I also have lived in Mexico City for many years, and make something between an OK and a good living. If you have a degree in Education, a TEFL certificate and 3 or 4 years experience you can do quite well, but you earn every penny (or peso, as it were) of it. Also, I think if you try to base your standard of living on how you would live in the States, you might not think so, for example, living in a trendy area, eating out a lot, coffee at Starbucks every day, etc., but if you live in a "normal" middle class neighborhood, and live like a middle class Mexican lives you can usually enjoy some perks you'd never have in the States (or UK, Australia, et el) like household help, fairly frequent vacations, things like that. I think you eat far better on far less money, much more fresh fruit and veggies for a fraction of what they'd cost in most other places.
