Leopalace does sound convenient, and with interac I believe the rent comes out of your paycheck automatically. But, how much does it cost? I know rents vary from place to place, It would be really useful to know how much you guys are paying per month...?

I pay 53,000/month including the small service fee. It's not inaka but my city is very small (the only buildings that you could call high-rise around here are the hotels next to the shinkansen station). But one of my old JTEs has a son who moved into a similar Leopalace place somewhere in Tokyo earlier this year and she is paying about 90,000/month for his.

Well if you're staying at one and can read Japanese, you can easily look up the info on a website. It might not be exact on the mark (depending on the type of plan, etc), but it'll give you a rough idea.

Psst, look in the upper line of the page. In clear English it has a link to the English version of the page.

Used to be, LeoPalace actually had an FAQ which listed some prices. Not anymore, I see. So, you'll pay various prices depending on what size and location of place you have.

In 2002/3, I paid 44,000/month for a 1K Leopalace with a loft bit for sleeping in (which was fine in winter, but impossible to sleep in in the summer). This was in Kyushu, though.

Given that salaries have declined, I hope that rent on LP apartments has not increased.

I'm paying 60,000 Yen a month, inclusive of water, gas and electric. My apartment is small but with a loft space that can easily sleep four people, functional and modern.

I think my company makes a small profit from leasing the apartment on my behalf, and they have said that for stays of longer than a year it isn't the most cost-effective means of accommodation.

It is a good starting point when you arrive though as they tend to come with stuff like a microwave, futon and bedding (a thin futon!), TV, fridge/freezer, air con, internet.

If you have not stayed in Japan before, be aware there are places of similar style and quality as Leopalace all over the greater Tokyo area. Leopalace is just a bit higher profile as a larger chain of apartment buildings. I stayed in one of their apartments before and had no problems, but be sure to read the fine print. Numerous upfront and exit fees will add a lot and need to be accounted for to judge the final amout you will pay.

When I lived in a Leopalace apartment in Tokyo, my rent was 800,000 yen per month, which was subsidized to 600,000 yen per month by my employer at the time. Internet was free, but utilties were not included.

Ive posted photos on this site before of what to expect from a Leopalace, here is a link to them again.

I love how, even though the whole apartment is clean, the drain catcher thing in the sink is still filthy. I hate those things so much.

i think you added one to many zeros there. Even that subsidized figure is twice what a JET earns in a month.

Putting in disposable draining nets helps stop food debris messing up the evil plastic drains.

I'm in Hamamatsu and I pay 60,000 a month. It's tiny and my friends say they all pay a lot less, though!

Are you free to choose your own internet provider with Leo Palace or do you have to use theirs? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question.

Theirs is free. Whether you use it or not is up to you.

There is a phone connection. So if you want to purchase your own phone line and internet service using that line, you are most welcome to.

But you need permission from Leopalace if you want to get fibre optic broadband installed.
