I have just completed the TESOL foundation course and my wife, Heather, is going to take it in a month or so. She has a degree. We have a 3 year old daughter (adopted from Guangzhou) and we are looking to teach in China approx February next year. We would like to correspond with any other couples that have done the same journey that we intend to embark on. We have some questions about adjusting to life in China and if anyone has managed to get placed in the same school as their partner. Also interested to know how their children have adapted to life in China. And any tips/things to avoid/things to bring etc. Would love to hear from you. Thanks for your help. Cheers Rob

Do not know how it is in China ,but where I am at the moment, I think it can be a cop-out for some schools. I was promised full-time when another teacher left and it never materlised. Another good one is to give one partner loads of extra hrs no O/T and keep the wife in my case P/T or even less with the number of hours.

Then perhaps posting in the China forum will draw more responses.

By all means, if you're looking for China, get it up in the China forums as well.

BUt here's a good place for general info about couples working in EFL.

It sounds like WhiskeyEcho has had a pretty negative time, but I don't think this is standard. (As you say, though, Japan is saturated!)

A lot of places actually like to hire couples. There are some downsides (if one leaves, both leave, if one gets mad, both are mad, usually) but the upside is the support they offer each other over seas. A lot of folks seem to think that couples are more stable, and therefore more likely to complete contracts...

Best,
Justin
