Hello fellow friends,
Why is it so difficult to find a job in The Kingdom? I have sent out so many emails to schools and language centres in Saudi Arabia to find myself with little success! I'm a qualified Kindergarten Teacher from the UK, I can also teach up to Key stage 2 at Primary level... I have 3 years experience under my belt.. where am I going wrong?? Can anyone help guide me? Do school generally like to employ American citizens only?

Thanks in adavnce for any help.

There may be a few things you may need to consider.
1. Are you a male or female kindergarten teacher? My guess is that KSA would be more inclined to hire female teachers for -kindergarten. In fact most female Saudis would probably fill those positions before hiring from abroad.

2. Your CV is not up to snuff.... meaning you may need to revamp your approach on paper. How you represent your qualifications.

3. Ethinicty...believe it or not some employers do consider your origin. Or to be more blunt -the color of your skin.

Since no one has commented, thus far...perhaps someone more qualified regarding your situation may now chime in....with more info????

There are very few jobs for non-Saudi KG teachers. The big demand is for EFL teachers.

I'm a black British EFL teacher. 4 years exp. Will have MA in TEFL within six months. Looking for a job in KSA next year.

Should I expect my skin colour to be a big problem?

I heard in S E Asia I'd have the same problem but on getting here, I have been sought out by good employers once my work had been observed.

If its a real problem I'd rather know sooner and reset my sights.

Cheers,

Loz

Ethnicity and skin colour can still be an issue. Be prepared for some problems.

Siano, the better international schools in KSA have extremely high standards for hiring as they pay very well. I'm talking about international schools, often connected with companies like Aramco. They usually hire highly experienced teaching couples, which means you would likely lose out even to a less-experienced KG teacher who is married to a highly experience male teacher of high school chemistry.

The other private schools in Saudi Arabia tend to hire non-Westerners or local-hire wives of men currently working in Saudi Arabia. Both of these groups demand less pay and fewer benefits than a single Western female on her own.

What schools have you applied to?

There are a few British schools in Saudi Arabia; 2 in Jeddah, 1 in Riyadh, and 2 to 3 in Dhahran/Khobar. I suggest you apply to those. The pay ranges from SR. 11,000 to SR. 15,000 per month (for new hires, otherwise it can as high as SR. 20,000).

Aside from the above Western-managed schools, there are many tens of Asian/Arab-managed British curriculum schools. They don't pay well, about SR. 4,000 to SR. 6,000 per month.

And there are American schools as well, again, a few are Western-managed (1-2 in each of the main cities I mentioned above), and many are Asian/Arab-managed American curriculum schools. Pay rates are similar to what I mentioned above for the 2 categories.

Seek these schools out and apply to them.
