Hi, I have just been offered a contract for teaching in the UAE. I have a degree in primary teaching, a masters and a degree in tesol. I have been teaching for 7 years- mainly supply teaching- in mainstream Australian schools. I have no actual TESOL experience. This contract pays about $5,000 Australian dollars per month. They will fly my family there with yearly trips home. They are giving us a free apartment in Al Ain but no car, and Abu Dhabi is apparently one hour and fifteen minutes from Al Ain. Is this reasonable or can I negotiate for transport?? Thanks, from Marguerite Wild

Why would you expect to be given a car?

Never happen... education employers in the UAE don't provide cars... or transport usually. Nor have I heard of anyone being housed in one city to work in another. I suspect there may be some confusion... consult your employer. I would NOT accept this situation. If there is anything to negotiate, it is that you are given housing in the city where you teach.

Also, Abu Dhabi is more like an hour and 45 minutes from Al Ain.

I think there might just be a small misunderstanding here. Remember Abu Dhabi Emirate is BIG and Al Ain is in Abu Dhabi Emirate. So you can work for ADEC in Al Ain - you will still be in Abu Dhabi but not in the CITY of Abu Dhabi. I don't see any reason to turn down the post in terms of the offer, although if you have school age children check about school fees: you do mention 'family.'

Some do give transportation allowances which get dumped into your monthly salary (but not figured into your leaving gratuity).

It's definitely quite common to get help with transport IF you need it for you job. All UGRU staff used to get a transportation allowance in their salaries which would cover daily taxis - not sure if they still get this. I know of one person on a PPP contract who lives on the edge of Al Ain and works on the edge of Abu Dhabi - and gets free transport. UAEU teachers on assignment to e.g. the Police college in Abu Dhabi get transport.

I thought that they all gave transportation allowances... at least I got one with all of my tertiary contracts. I have just never heard of anyone ever getting a car though, except a very few places in Saudi.
