Archaeology magazine this month has an article about Madain Saleh (the Nabatean outpost of Petra in Saudi), so Ms holoholo might want to check it out.

I know people who are doing internet transfers regularly from Riyadh to the world... no problem. This is "oil" country... the banking system is very modern. (in fact, I had direct deposit of pay into my checking account in the Gulf long before it became the standard in the US)

Each posting answers my questions yet leads to more. I suppose this is typical.

just out of curiosity, how did they find you? Did you just put your CV on Eslcafe?

I answered a job posting ad from one of the websites I've been perusing as of late. I have not posted my CV on this site- should I? Is that what most do? I'm still learning this forum.

Petra's cousin is right in the house!

Trapezius are you referring to Jubbah? Actually KSA has thousands of rock art sites from what I know but how will I get to see them if I can't go alone or be in the company of 'strange' men? I suppose I'll have to start having backgammon parties with the ladies and if I win, they have to accompany me to these hot, dusty sites?

I don't suppose they let females into the local archaeological societies, if they have them at all.

Thanks all for the banking information. I have my interview Tuesday so the mystery will soon be solved.

Check out Archaeology magazine to see an article on "Petra's Cousin" ... I referred to it above.

And no... we weren't suggesting that you post your CV here. In fact... with an MA, you will want to apply directly to any future university jobs... personally I would not put information out there on the net. The top employers have people come to them, they don't peruse websites for CVs. Laughing

The IPA Women's Branch, if run by the same principles as the Men's branch, would seem to have a good reputation and almost obsessively spotless floors.

Well...it is unwise to come work in Saudi Arabia without any concept of coming away with substantial savings. The reason is that the country is a large prison, and a very sterile one at that. You may be an exception if you intend to come away with some anthropological nuggets, but for most expats this country would be a partial or almost complete waste of their time without at least some significant funds to repatriate.

Hey SnB... did you see that she is paying off a large education loan? So it is the money she's after... just not to save it. Laughing

Well, I do not think the Magic Kingdom has a society for archaeology!
The only society which is active in the Magic Kingdom is the Society for PVPV (Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice). Laughing
If you want to visit archaeological sites in the Magic MKingdom, you have to obey the laws of the society for PVPV! Laughing

Many of the really interesting archaeological sites are almost inaccessible for a foreigner. Archaelolgy (and anything to do with history before the coming of Islam, in the time known as the jahilliya ) is very, very controversial in the Kingdom. The Sunni Wahhabis, for the most part, believe that it is wrong to give any special status to places that were important or sacred before the coming of the Prophet, and consider visiting some of these places to be akin to idolatry. The Shia population in the Eastern province have a much more history-friendly attitude, especially since it is their special historical places that usually get torn down.

Many of the more interesting archaeological sites are blocked off and it is hard to get permission to visit them, especially if they contain evidence that any other religion (such as Christianity) may have once had a foothold in the Arabian peninsula. You may need to develop some good contacts to get permission to visit these places, and you will certainly need to be escorted by reliable, preferably influential, Saudi friends.

Start working on the research now. You will certainly find it fascinating, no matter which part of the Kingdom you planned to live in. When you really get into it, it's enough to keep you busy during those long boring Saudi days and weeks.

And don't forget about Bahrain....the remnants of the Dilmun civilization are fascinating and deserve days to really examine. You need to go see them before some fundamentalists decide to have them razed. Have fun! Very Happy

I have been to Jubbah, but no, I was referring to Mada'in Saleh, built by the same people who built Petra.

BTW, you can get to these sites, don't worry. The Kingdom has changed in this regards considerably and is keen to exploit the archaeological sites for fame, money, and respect. Some of the major sites have organized tours. And if you make some connections and pull some strings, you can contact the antiquities department in Riyadh and present them your credentials and they could perhaps grant you carte blanche access to all sites for study and preservation. Who knows!

Since the murders of the French tourists near Medain Saleh a couple of years ago, I hear that it has become MUCH more difficult to visit there.

Definitely not for everybody, maybe just for Westerners? Still, I can't see how.

The 2 hotels there have packages you can see on their websites, and I know many people who have gone recently.
