I've just got a job in Nanjing, China, starting at the end of August. I currently live in South Korea with my wife. We're both British.
Applying for our visas seems immensely confusing, I don't appear to be able to apply directly to The Chinese Consulate here in Korea, am I able to use a travel agency here?
My wife wont be working in China so she'll need a dependants visa, I've been told by the school I'll be working at that I'll need to get our marriage certificate Apostilled but I'm unsure if this is part of the visa process or something I need to do beforehand. Does anyone know if I can get documents notarized in Korea?
In fact, does anyone have any light to shed on the entire situation? Anyone been through this process?

Why do you say this? have you inquired at the consulate in Korea already? What did you ask and what was their reply?

Step 1: secure a job in China.
Step 2: have the school apply for and send you the required paperwork so that you,in turn, can apply for a Z visa (two documents in total).
Step 3: make sure the school knows which consulate you will be applying for the Z visa at. The place annotated on the paperwork has to be the same place you go to apply for the visa.
Step 4: apply for and recieve the Z visa.
Step 5: arrive in China, go to your school, begin the process for the residence permit.
Re: visa agents, in Hong Kong at least, agents (the ones I dealt with in the past for L and F visas) weren't able to process a Z visa. Applicants have to visit the China Visa Office in Wan Chai to get a Z visa in HK. The same may be true in other countries/administrative districts. Someone may come along now and say they did get a Z visa through an agent, but I would question the veracity of that claim.
As for your wife, someone will come along soon and relate their experience doing what you're trying to do now. |

Cleric, I say this in reference to this, from the Chinese Embassy in Seoul's website:
1/ From September 1, 2007, the Consular Office of Chinese Embassy in South Korea will no longer accept individual application for Tourist (L) Visa, Business (F) Visa, Work (Z) Visa, Student (X) Visa, Residence (D) Visa, Transit (G) Visa and Crew (C) Visa. Therefore, Korean Citizens and other aliens in South Korea have to apply for China visa (Hong Kong Visa is not included) through travel agencies authorized by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Korea.
Thanks for your response, the school are Fedexing or whatever the Chinse equivalent is me the documents at the moment but I am trying to work it all out before they arrive so I can set the wheels in motion once I have the documents. |

Looks like they've found a way to make visas for expensive for people while also keeping local travel agents in the money. Do they list the approved agents on their site or not? Or do you have to waste more of your time phoning them to find that out? Dealing with consulates and getting information out of them is often not a joyous occasion.
The good news is that you might save yourself the trouble of going to Seoul (if you're not already there) if they have approved agents in various cities in Korea. |

Cleric, it looks like I've found a list of travel agents in Korea authorised by the Chinese embassy, annoyingly they're all in Seoul which couldn't be much further from where I lived if I tried! I will contact a few of them and see what they say.
I'm concerned about getting my marriage cert notarized though and I'm waiting for a response from my embassy in Seoul to see if they can provide this service. |

| Not sure, but I flew from Korea to Nanjing just under three years ago on a tourist visa, found a job in Nanjing within five days, and just got the work visa there in Nanjing. I used a travel agent in Seoul in JongNo, was 45 000 won for the visa (they got it for me, would have been 5 000 won less had I gone to the Chinese embassy myself). |
