Holidays are pretty much standard among all these recruiter contracts as they are set by the Ministry contract. They all give the appr 2 months in the summer and other Oman holidays that I mentioned in the other thread. What exactly are you looking for? Exact dates or something?

Salalah is a beautiful coastal town with probably the mildest climate in the country. It is developing rapidly, but is still quite traditional, and tribal ties play a significant part in the running of things, including the colleges.
While it is a very pleasant place to live, especially for families, Salalah is remote geographically, and students' level of English and basic academic discipline (attendance, punctuality, homework, independent study, academic integrity) reflects this. Their genuine kindness might compensate for this, and it is wise to choose one's battles.
There are two colleges and one university, as well as the port and airforce base, which feed a considerable, largely welcoming expat community. The college staffed by Bahwan is in transition as accreditation approaches, and a concerted effort is being made to work towards higher standards. Perfectionists and serious EFL experts may find themselves ill at ease with the state of affairs, but by Oman standards things run fairly smoothly.
Salalah is not for everyone, but if you are laid-back and tolerant, you may love it. |

I absolutely love it here...... the lack of amenities are more than compensated by the beauty of the UNESCO site.
Friendly locals and indeed the base is a welcome focal point. |

Based on requests by PM, some info on surfing and students.
Surfing: Salalah is a popular surfing spot, with both teaching and visiting surfers. The sea is a bit too rough during Khareef (the rainy monsoon of June to August) but fine in other months.
Students: The local students are extremely endearing and for the most part very respectful and polite. However, a complete lack of academic tradition conspires with strong tribal allegiances to cause some friction when it comes to attendance, punctuality, homework and study (or lack thereof) and 'helping' others on tests. Teachers who build a reputation for being firm but fair experience fewer attempts at 'negotiation', which can be the lowlight of the job.
Life: For the most part there is a collegial atmosphere between expats from the different workplaces (including non-teachers). There are more social options than in most Omani college towns, and the outdoors options and climate make it a great place to be, even though the distance from Muscat can be a hassle.
For quality of life, Salalah is the Gulf's best-kept secret. You didn't hear it from me. |
