Hi:
I am presently at UGRU in the UAE, but we may be closing down in the next year or so and I'll probably be looking for work. I was wondering what the general working conditions are like at SQU in addition to salaries, benefits etc.
Thanks.

SQU has always been a pretty decent place to teach as long as money isn't your main goal. The salaries are low by Gulf standards. But the management has always been easy for most people to deal with... even with the changes that have occurred over the years. They just lost their Omani director who resigned and they currently have an 'acting' director, so that is a bit up in the air.
Their systems are set up and have been ticking along for years without any major problems... even though the student body and teacher numbers have ballooned enormously since I was there at the beginning. Friends of mine are still there more than 20 years later. The students are still pleasant and of a similar standard to UAEU. Classes are sexually integrated and I have heard that there are now more women than man (opposite of the first years) in most majors.
Housing ranges from OK to good and they are furnished. LC people rarely get put on campus these days, and I do know a few people who have chosen to take the housing allowance and find their own.
Their teachers are mostly on the road, but I did see an SQU person or two posting here in the last few days, so perhaps they will come back... or they can send me a PM if they want me to add anything that they don't want to publish themselves.

Thanks VS. I (and quite possibly many other UGRU-ers) look forward to hearing from anyone else if they have anything to add. |
