Quite liked what I saw of VN & its people during a brief visit last year & the idea of a longer stay appeals. Not really a big-city person though -- busy traffic & its drone wear on me.
I can live without an expat scene & amenities. I'm well qualified, experienced, & not bent on earning top dollar.
So my question: any chance of finding teaching situations outside Hanoi or HCMC? |

can you go to the bathroom in a hole on the ground?
the middle region may offer some job positions.. most notably in nha trang or hue (nha trang seems to be the better bet) but expect low pay. i'm not even sure you can live as a westerner with the pay... as far as specifics (i.e. will there be enough for toilet paper), i'm not sure. most people who teach in other regions (like the countryside) do it as vvolunteers |

It is possible to find work outside HCMC and Hanoi but you will be limited in hours and pay. I dont think the living standard is as bad as quoc_viet03 stated but dont count on 5 star luxury. Also expect to be watched much more by the government and local people. There are jobs in smaller cities in the center of Vietnam, near or in Da Nang, (Da Nang is the 4th largest city) but many must be acquired prior to arriving, usually with a school-work program or NGO, and yes you can be paid!
There is an English school in Vung Tau, (1 hours outside of HCMC). Vung Tau is becoming the new hot spot for English teaching since it is a great holiday destination as well as many local and oversea (Russian) corporate employees which live there because of the oil companies which are stationed there.
I knew someone who working in Hue, but he was working for a school in HCMC and was contracted out to Hue for 6 months. Ive also met someone working in Hoi An. She had just landed a job with a resort teaching the staff for 500 USD/month, accommodation included. Before that, she was working for a small school and teaching some private lessons in Hoi An but had very few hours (5-10/week) and was paid only 5 USD/hour. Enough to survive but thats it. Ive tried to acquire work in the Mekong Delta but with little to no success. The city of Can Tho might have something soon as it is becoming more developed and commercialized.
Sorry that most of this information is not from direct experience but from other sources. |

A lot of schools are expanding here and building schools outside of HCMC and Hanoi. It is starting to happen quickly IMO. |

Yeah, ILA is hiring specificaly for Vung Tao and VATC is hiring for Danang. Danang is still a big city. Vung Tao is nice, has fresh air and a nice breeze, but the beach is iffy and the water is oily. |
