I'm moving to the UAE in September.
I did a little searching and couldn't find a direct answer to this question other than "all laptops run on AC converted to DC power so you can bring your laptop."
But what about the converter? Surely the converter that works on U.S. 110 won't convert UAE 220. Or will it?
If I need a different converter is this something I should look for in the US or the UAE?
Thanks! |

You won't need a different power converter. Most laptops run a "universal" power input. Most of them will take any power from 110 to 220 and they then convert it to what they need. You can look at your laptops power plug and see if it says 110 or 220 or 110-240 and then you will know for certain.
Your biggest problem will be the actual plug differences (US plugs are different from the UAE plugs) but getting a plug converter when you first arrive is simple, cheap and easy to do. |

Here's the other question...what about power for a Wii?
I haven't researched this elsewhere yet... |

Same answer. Look at the specs either on the Wii, the power apparatus or the owner's manual...
Most portable items, almost by necessity, have universal transformers. But, it's wise to check first...

You can also buy a step down transformer from say Carrefour. Just besure the wattage is sufficient for the appliance, you can buy up to a 1500watt step down transformer for about USD100 or even less. The outlet in the transformer is the same as north america.
Be aware that your Wii cartridges will not work in Wii machines sold here nor will the cartridges work in your North American machine.
You can plug both machines into the outlet directly (with an adaptor) I use a step down transformer because I (no science, just my female brain at work) believe that it allows my electronics to last longer. |

A step down transformer works for all of your US appliances which only use 110 volts...
As for the Wii... you need to double check the power supply on it (I'm nto sure about that one.. if it says it is universal power 110 to 220 then it is all good).
As for the games... most of the people selling games in the UAE use the PAL formatting which wont' work on US/canadian wii's. But you can find plenty of places which sell NTSC games so it really isn't that much of a problem. |

Most computers and related gizmos are dual voltage nowadays, but don't assume anything. Newly arrived in Abu Dhabi, I plugged my American computer into the wall and there was a bright flash, a loud bang and a small mushroom cloud which floated up to the ceiling. My computer was 110 only. Fortunately it was just the power supply that needed to be replaced. |
