| wow that sounds reprehensible. I thought I was anticiapting most contingency situations but I hadn't considered that. |

I'd give it a pass and suggest a recon trip where you visit the areas you're interested in, live there for some time, meet people and teachers in the schools, and get a feel for the place, and so forth.
To do that would require a tourist visa and your purpose is genuine touring and some job hunting thrown in -- nothing about the visa requirement that says you can't look for work, you just can't actually work on a L visa. This would also apply to other countries that say 'employment prohibited' on their tourist visas.
It would require some cash and time investment to do this, but surely it would be worth it. I'm not really thrilled about this trend with recruiters offering contracts without an interview, or similarly, FTs who pick some Tier II place in interior China they've never been to before, sign up blindly, and get on board a plane. Not to say you're guilty of this, but I think so many of the problems could be avoided if FTs would simply show up and tour the area first before applying for the job. |

Very true... but TBH I (and I figure quite a few other people out there) wouldn't be able to afford the costs involved in doing that. All we can really do is check the contract, speak to FTs already there, scan the forums, and if we get a bad feeling, look elsewhere. It mostly comes down to luck with this, but ultimately it seems the only realistic option. |

| In a perfect world it would be best to physically check out a place. Unfortunately its not that feasible for most people as it requires both time and money. Which sad to say is often in short supply. Thats why these types of forums are quite useful. |

It seems that most people who come here do have time, and as so many boast of how cheap the country is, it definitely makes sense to check things out first, a week or two should suffice and it wouldnt cost you more than, maybe, 2-300y a day-definitely areasonable price to pay to make sure that all that is promised bears fruit, ie, that ____zhou truly is the birthplace of Chinese culture, has the most standard mandarin, the classes are small and full of cute, attentive children, the beaches are within 10 minutes of your accom (which of course is modelled after Madonnas Manhattan digs)and have endless white sand, and that 4500y a month is more than local doctors make (youll have to excuse Dr.Yee driving by in his S class-the car of course belongs to his sisters friend). |
