I think the competitiveness of large numbers of applicants is driving down wages. My goal is to get over there - I will fullfill my end of the bargain as long as they fullfill theirs - just like a teaching contract in the states - and once in country - I can do face to face interviews if I want to move on to another job next year. Who knows - I might like the place and want to stay longer. So far I have one contract offer for sure - others are contacting me but September is fast approaching - so got to make a decision. Most Unis did seem to be paying in the 4500 rmb to 5000 rmb range. |

Agree with the above sentiments, but the only ones I see working for less than 5000/mo(at language schools) are ex-cons/perverts etc. Even the newbies, provided they have a modicum of responsibility, if they start out at less than 5000, one of two things happens after two months-they are given a raise or they leave, either for greener pastures or home. |
Whereas I know quite a few people working for 5k even with the free accom. Simply because they don't have a degree and Celta/Tefl certification. IF you have the experience and the qualifications needed, you'll be able to get the better jobs. However if you don't and still wish to work in China, you'll have to make concessions in salary.
This whole thing of undercutting you doesn't really fly since its the unqualified people that will work at lower amounts. The people with the qualifications and experience will always be able to demand more money for their time.
To the three posters above, do you have qualifications (BA, Tefl, Celta, etc) & experience in teaching? |

Not always true IMO. Location and type of teaching is also important to some people ... this is true of me anyway. Well paid jobs in Hainan are a rarity, and I worked there due to the location. My last job was in Yangshuo and salaries are less than generous there too, but the actual work was pretty enviable IMO.
Generally, I have little interest in working in a large city......even a population of 500,000 is waaay to large for me really. I dont want anywhere cold, and I absolutely wouldnt take a job with class sizes of more than 15 students no matter the salary!
I view location, type of teaching, and hours as being the key things .... A Uni job in BJ with 30+ students just wouldnt pay enough for me to ever accept the job.
Im not a pervert, ex-con or unqualified ... but in saying that...I am back home...so perhaps the assertion is partly correct! |

Only a BA, no Celta or Tefl, and no experience prior to China. |
