Hello,
Does anyone have experience using Satellite TV in Saudi Arabia?
Can you get the basic British TV channels? How much do these packages normally cost and who are good providers?
Thanks!

Orbit-Showtime is the only provider that specializes in English channels. They focus on American channels, but there are BBC news and entertainment channels in addition to Sky News. You get about 10 uncensored premium movie channels plus about 6 Dubai-based commercial (censored but not too heavily) commercial movie stations.

All told about 80 English channels, mostly US-oriented. This includes 10 HD channels that are provided at no extra cost; $65 for everything monthly. More if you want all the Arab sports channels (you can't get European football without them).

Ok, it's a bit embarrassing to explicitly ask this...but can you get Coronation Street (ITV1) and Eastenders (BBC1) and Postman Pat (BBC 2) on Orbit-Showtime?
I would definitely pay my 65$ for quality TV of this standard.

BBC World which is on Orbit shows Eastenders and other pabulum like Holby General. I have colleagues who regularly dose themselves with this Opium for the Masses.

I am not aware of any method by which they can watch Coronation Street.

I get my laughs by discussing Theology with the Mutawaeen.

No ..
You cannot...
You cannot do anything where in you might enjoy yourself..or look as though you might do.

BTW Veiled as you are the only decent American who has ever ventured into the Persian gulf...how is it then that you're still not there?

Hey at least it is a change from the usual TV question about sports channels...

Here I am lila... you called? Laughing (and it's tea... not coffee) I'm retired in the US and the caregiver for an elderly parent these days. I'd much rather be in the Gulf, but I'm reaching the age where I would be unemployable even if I were available.

Such is life...

I've seen Coronation Street somewhere in that Orbit-Showtime morass...

Never watched it tho...too many rounded vowels for my liking...

I had orbit satellite setup last year...which did have Eastenders, but not Coronation street...
go figure...never watched either...in my estimate...most of what was offered up for TV viewing was reality based trash along with movie channels that seemed to play the same films over and over again! Mad
It filled the apartment with background noise. This time round will not bother with TV...it's over rated in my opinion.

By which you mean the only one who never says anything positive about the US. That apparently makes you feel good. You can take your snobbery (or bigotry?) and accent and shove them.

"Level of quality" for many people depends on where they've grown up, and some can never make the transition to appreciating something from the other side, although I certainly have British friends who love quite a number of US shows. And vice versa. (Personally I can't relate to British shows even though I spent 15 years in Europe.)

At least two of my good friends are former professors of mine with PhDs, brilliant people who don't throw the baby out with the bath water--or the TV out the window, because they know it's simply a matter of knowing where to look. Obviously, if someone knows how to select a good book or something worthwhile on the internet, one should know how to find it on the widescreen, especially if s/he likes movies.

I think you are getting confused with BBC Prime. BBC World is a news channel, available free to air in Saudi Arabia.

Even if you splash out for Orbit/Showtime, you won't find much British TV. As someone said, the coverage seems to be more American-based. A friend of mine got some sort of device (don't ask me exactly what it is) which allows her to use BBC Player - normally only available with in the UK - to catch up with Eastenders etc.

Dear Cleopatra,

I think I just found your asp (see above.)

And, from the Urban Dictionary:

1. .Viscious
I think they mean "vicious." Come on guys, it's not a difficult word to spell. Definition: Savage, brutal.
This is a vicious attack on people with poor spelling skills. Specifically people who spell the word "vicious" as "viscious."

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=viscious

Regards,
John

John:

EVERYBODY mistypes from time to time. I think the poster was trying to write "VISCOUS"

As in, "Everybody is glad that Tony Hayward has stopped issuing viscous advice because the oil is viscous enough."

Am I right, poster?

Dear NCTBA,

I know the poster was trying to write "vicious"- which is exactly what the poster was being.

If you're going to be it, you should know how to spell it.

Regards,
John
