Outside of Saudi, all 4 of my employers asked for reference letters AND letters of employment. Reference letter for the glowing review... and letters of employment for the details of dates and salaries. All of my employers provided them automatically when I departed. Some checked with the references and some didn't.

Your clerical habits are only slightly worse than mine. It looks like the first page of your 1040s will have to do, one for each missing year. Try to get some reference letters as well.
