So that all these people in foreign countries who I'm sending my resume to can actually open it. I'm sure not everyone has MS Word 2007 right?

Should I attach a .docx and a .doc so that if they have 2003 they can open it?

or what do you guys do. please help I'm eager to send out resumes today

I hate receiving docx files because I have to convert them.
So, yeah, I guess the idea of a doc and a docx version is probably a good one.

Just send the .doc file.

I have never been in a school abroad that had 2007. By and large 2003 is still the standard around the world.

I only send pdf files, unless word files are sepcifically requested. I've never had a school complain, and I've had two schools mention that it worked in my favour.

In a pdf the format you have designed will be exactly what they see. Often different versions of word, or different programmes altogether, render a document differently.

A pdf can't be edited, and is more easily navigated (scholling, paging, zooming, etc).

I definitely prefer PDF files, although I did have a school request I re-send my resume in .doc instead.

I think sending a PDF file is more professional, but I think some schools might not even have Acrobat Reader... To be safe maybe u should send a PDF file, .doc file, fax and mail a hard copy, lol.... the hard copy should probably be in brail too....

Some places prefer not to have any attachments, for fear of viruses, or they want to scan the text for keywords.

Ask what the employer wants.

Could be an rtf file would serve to get around the doc vs. docx situation, too.

Everyplace I've worked in the last few years has had office 07, so I don't think it's true that word 2003 is still the standard.

But, better safe than sorry. I would send only the .doc file; sending .doc AND .docx isn't necessary, and doesn't show a lot of computer literacy. If they have word 2003, they can open .doc; if they have word 2007, they can open .doc; so if you're sending .doc, what use is there to having the .docx file as well?

I'd prefer using rtf for this, as virtually anything will open it. However, a lot of people don't know what it is, and if their word processor doesn't recognise it automatically, they don't know what to do...

Best,
Justin

If in severe doubt, you can get the .pdf converter add-on for 2007 or a free downloadable "printer" for ,pdf for earlier versions. EVERYBODY, but the true droolers can open a .pdf file!
