There ought to be a disclaimer to Americans considering employment with HCT that "College" doesn't mean what you think it does. Think high school/finishing school.

Or think 'Correctional Institute'.

In U.S. terms it's probably something between high school and community college.

That might be generous.

Either that or it's a damning indictment of the US education system. Confused

A lot of former and present HCTers refer to their days spent teaching at the Women's College(s) as 'baby-sitting' - giving out crayons to the least able at the back, and engaging those who could understand a bit of English with a little simple conversation. So any comparison with US High School is way out of line.

Some of the guys are little better, and they prefer to spend their time chewing on burgers and smoking. As for the Police Academy recruits - jeez, what a COMPLETE waste of time and space they were! I think they spent more time sleeping than learning, and the only class I ever kept alive from beginning to end was the one where I taiught them a few card games.

So perhaps the 'correctional institute' comparison is a little excessive too. Most inmates would know those games already.

Based on what I see of the product of US High schools in the last ten years, I suspect that there is a great deal of mere 'babysitting' that has been done. No crayons, but more of a dumbing down of the curriculum... same as is done in the Gulf. Of my students at HCT, there was a high enough percentage of sharp, hard-working young women to make my job completely worthwhile. Remember all that research on the effect of teacher expectations on student success? Cool

There is really no way to fairly compare the two countries educational programs because of the bizarre (and bizarre is what it is) idea of switching the language of education at tertiary level. If American kids had to suddenly start doing tertiary level at say... Spanish...

Pages back you said 'sackings, what sackings?' VS.

How long is it that you've been on the other side of the world now?

Well, there is little more to be said on the topic for now, but did you note that there have been over 16,600 views? I'd say that the news is out, and ADW is likely going to have lots of those interviewed and offer say... no thanks. Laughing
