Hello friends,

I have just received my state background check and notarized copies of my degrees. What is the next step? Do I actually need to have them notarized at the federal level? Where? Where do I send the documents fro Vietnam Embassy notarization and translation? Thanks for you help guys, I am soon on my way!

Your background check should be notarized. Then

Authenticate them (all these) at the State level -- at the State of xxxxx Department of State.

Then send to US Dept. of State, Authentications unit.

Then to the Vietnamese Embassy in D.C. or the Vietnamese Consulate in San Francisco.

See the sticky thread for addresses. And do yourself a favor and don't think/believe you can cut any corners with this, no matter what you hear/read/imagine.

Google the name of your state+apostille to find out how it's done in your state.

True that, Galileo, but...

The US doesn't apostile for Vietnam; it will be authenticated, even at the state level. The office will know what's up. Just be sure to tell them it's for Vietnam.

True, the US does not apostille for Vietnam.

Notarized at local level.
Authenticated at State level.
Authenticated at National level.

I was not drinking at the time of post, and I'm not drinking now.

I can only speak for myself.

I took my degree and Criminal background check to the US Embassy in Hanoi and got it "notarized." I had to pay (way too much money) for the Embassy to "verify it was true" and stamp it.

I may be wrong in the terminology. Therefore following CThomas is a good idea.

But there's also a difference. Brentblack, you are in the US, and I did this in Vietnam.

And to add to this story, I never got a work permit because my school was so screwed up. I ended up not getting the work permit, and I left Vietnam and am in a neighboring country.

Money wasted for nothing.

I didn't mean to imply anything negative. Maybe just a quick post. Thanks for your response.

One note: from what I understand, taking this stuff to the US embassy in Hanoi to be notarized is extremely unlikely to produce a WP now. From what I've been reading, experiencing, and from what a Hanoi-based lawyer told (via proxy here in HCMC) they've clamped down on this because of fake degrees getting through. That's why I absolutely super-strongly suggest to anyone doing this to take your stuff through the Chain of Authentication, regardless of what you hear. Else, you end up biting your nails, spending lots of money, and/or shipping out. I'm currently using my good buddy FedEx to help me do this right, as I should have done before.

I was told directly by the Labor Dept. ( the ones that control the WP) that only the French can do their paperwork in country via their embassy.

Going to your embassy to get it stamped is worthless and a was
