Hi, I would like to teach esl/tefl from late next year, the countries in which I am interested in teaching are China, Vietnam and Thailand. The one major problem that I do have at the moment and in the future is that I have just been released from prison on a fraud conviction, I am on licence until oct 2011 so will not be able to leave the country until after that date.

I made a mistake, I had never broken the law until this and I am 37 years of age, I know I will never be tempted into doing anything like that again as prison is a life changing experience and something I wish never to repeat again.

Is there anybody here that is or know's anyone with a conviction that has managed to teach, I would like to hear from you so I can get some knowledge. I am planning on volunteering to teach English in the UK to get some experience.

Thanks.

You MAY be able to teach in China. Some consulates ask for a record check, some do not.

You won't get a work visa for Vietnam with a positive finding on your record check. They do require them.

Thai consulates are now doing criminal record checks for applicants applying for a "B" visa who are wishing to work as teachers. Any positive finding will preclude being granted a visa.

Additionally, a degree is required for a work visa in Vietnam and Thailand. Many areas of China also require the degree as a prerequisite for getting a visa but in some cases, in less popular areas, you can get a work visa with just a TESOL cert.

You may be better suited for a career in politics.

Probably, I have come on here for serious advice, not to be taken the piss out of. I am being honest about my conviction, the only difference between me and you is that I have been caught and punished Rolling Eyes

Outside of your target zone, but for what it's worth: as you're from the UK and can legally work in Europe, it might be worth checking whether EU member countries will require a clean criminal record document, as you automatically have the right to work. I am not sure of the answer to this, but perhaps some of our regulars who are from the UK and working inside the EU can comment.

Further, I would wonder about your chances in Latin America.

Do you have specific reasons for targeting only the countries you've named?

Unless you're on a wanted list, Mexico has no criminal background check.

I have visited these countries in the past, I have enjoyed the culture and the people and that is why I want to go back.

Thanks for the rest of the advice, it is appreciated, thanks. Smile
