Why oh why oh why...does the British Council in Egypt only hire Egyptian or UK passport holders?? So sad...they've got a sweet opportunity right now for newly qualified teachers to do a training program then get hired on as regular full time teachers. |

OK... this one is easy. The British Council naturally wants to hire speakers of British English. Their students tend to expect it. And, any positions that they can't fill with a British passport holder naturally goes next to a local Egyptian... many of whom are outstanding English teachers who were trained by the British Council.
It is rare that they have to hire an American or some other nationality. Though I know of a few instances in the past 25 years, just for a course or two, never a contract.

The reason it looked strange to me is that there's very few BC's that have this requirement, and they're only in countries where Americans would have huge problems in getting work visas (Western Europe and Libya). |

It is more complicated than VS and NCTBA are leading on. It has something to do with an agreement with the government when Egypt gained its independence, from what I've heard.
It is a rule mainly from EGYPT, not from the BC.
I'm sure if you find the right person (probably older) at BC, they could fill you in. |
