I recently accepted a position with the British International School of Moscow, and will be headed there at the end of August. Firstly just wondering if anyone knows a heck of a lot about this district of schools? All I know is that I will be either at School 4 or School 9, which are both in the south. Housing is not technically provided, however my salary is a lot higher, and they do get the housing all lined up for me. I just have to pay for it.
My second question is that I am thinking of purchasing an iphone for when I am over there. Is it cheaper for me to buy one at home, here in Canada, or over there, in Russia? I know I have to make sure that it is not locked into Rogers or Telus before I leave.
Any thoughts or tips on life in Moscow would be appreciated as well!
Thanks! |

I own a Canadian iPhone 3GS on the Bell network. I've had no problems using it anywhere abroad. Placing calls abroad aren't horrible it's the internet usage that will kill you. If you take your iPhone with you & keep your Canadian number, don't use anything app that requires the net!
However, if you want to have your Canadian phone unlocked you'll need to pay a $70 fee plus have owned the phone for 30 days prior. |

i'm in the u.s., but...
the iphone4 is selling unlocked in canada if you buy it directly from apple for full price (no contract). my understanding is that if you buy one from a cell company there, even paying full price, they will be locked. (sounds like polarbear knows more about getting them unlocked by the telcos up there...i never looked into that since it doesn't apply to me.) when they were released in canada a month or so ago, the no-contract price from apple in u.s. dollars was about $650 for the 16gb and about $750 for the 32gb (if i recall correctly).
since you mentioned it not being locked, i assume you plan on swapping sim cards. if you hadn't thought of it, the iphone4 uses a micro-sim instead of a standard-sized sim. (standard sims can be cut down to micro size, either with a knife/scissors and skill or with a cutter you can purchase online.) i wouldn't think pre-paid micro-sims would be very common? |
