|
|
Hi, I'm a 55 year old Kiwi living in the UK. I've a degree and am Tefl certified. I have just finished teaching in summer school here in the UK and am wanting to teach full-time somewhere else in the world. Haven't decided yet as to where as I have a few concerns/considerations.
I'm not sure how acceptable my age will be and what countries will find it desirable to employ an older person with limited experience. Also I don't want to work in a country that is too hot and humid or at least in a school without air-con. I want to enjoy my time teaching and not feel miserable because of the heat.
Any advice anyone cares to share with me will be much appreciated.
Cheers |

People feel differently about different temps.
What do you consider "too hot"? |

Mid to high 30's with high humidity. I don't enjoy spending all my time wiping sweat off my face and it's so uncomfortable. I understand that all countries have times of the year that's hot (even the UK), I just don't want to be hot all year round. |

So basically anywhere in the EU, most of southern South America, and China or east/southeast Asia would fit your bill for weather or air-con.
55 is fine for most places (I am in my mid 50s) and have never had a problem finding suitable employment in Asia.
So how about narrowing it down to a continent or two?

The central highlands areas of Mexico would also fit the OPs bill. |

So would most of Colombia. Think Manizales, Bucaramanga. |

She's a Kiwi living in the UK. EU member citizen? If Kiwi citizenship only, much of the EU will be legally off-limits. |

You're fantastic - all of you, cheers for such helpful advice.
Southern South America is my first pick but I've been researching jobs there and the ones that I've come across have all required at least 2 years teaching experience or through an agency that requires a fee from the teacher. I've been told/read to NEVER use agencies that ask you for money. I'd like to have a job before I head off to unknown destinations. Any suggestions as to how to go about this for SA?
Second choice, though only by a hair, is Japan and for that I was planning on applying while still in the UK.
Yes, I hold a Kiwi passport and therefore can't work in the EU.

Summers in Japan are in the temp and humidity range you cannot tolerate. Even higher in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and further south. |
