Dear AGoodStory,
"I agree with Phil that this is a different use of the infinitive."
Different use - same infinitive.
"And part of the description of "infinitive" is that it:
"comes after a specific group of verbs that express intent or possibility about a future event."
He stopped to smoke - and you seem to imply that this does NOT express
intent or possibility about a future event."
By the way, " . . . you seem to imply that this does NOT express . . ."
does the infinitive "to imply" (above) express intent or possibility about future event?
Regards,
John |

Dear Sasha,
Why, thank you - it's refreshing to have a sober appraisal of the question.
Cheers,
John |

| There are only a handful of verbs where switching from gerund to infinitive changes the meaning (stop, forget, remember drinking v.stop to, remember to, forget to drink). otherwise the meanings are interchangeable in standard american english (as for ye island fold i have no clue). |

Hic! Oooofff! plink plink fizzz..
Where am I? I don't remember getting here. Did I remember or get first? Which has more emotional strength?
Hic! I must try not to drink so much. I must try not drinking so much. Is there any semantic difference? .... .... eeewwweeehhh!
That's enough. Need some hair of the dog that bit me. I need to drink. I like to drink. That has a lot of emotional force. I like drinking...
Hic!
Who are you?
Who am I? I have forgotten getting here...hic... |

Dear Sasha,
Being or nor being, that is the question.
Your answer, please.

With Grammar I feel a bit llike Lord Palmerston (or was it Disraeli) on the Schleswig-Holstein Question.
"Three men understood this. One is dead, one is mad and I have forgotten the wanswer." |

Let's be fair about this. I support the right for everyone to have his opinion...as long as it's the same as my opinion.
What's the best Polish vodka, Sasha? I'll be in Poland by this time next week. |
