I applied to work with them in mid July. I received no response from them whatsoever until I got an email today and voila!
(I am a guy too, but whatever)

This is with reference to your application for an ESL teaching position in Saudi Arabia.
We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to fill the position as an ESL Instructor for one of our projects in Saudi Arabia.
Please reconfirm your availability as our target date for deployment is September 18th, 2010. We can immediately start processing

Remuneration:
� The Monthly basic salary for this job is SR 9375/- tax free,
� Plus free furnished air conditioned accommodation with basic utilities.
� Free local transportation from housing to university & vice-versa.

2 points:
1) Beware of any employer who will take you on without so much as a telephone interview.
2) Beware going to KSA on a business visa. If they want you in the Kingdom by Sep 18th, it's clear that this is the type of visa you would be on. |

Can't tell you too much about the area as I lived in North Jeddah on a compound. The street is known as "Sharah Falasteen", but you'll get why when you start to pronounce the beverage "Bebsi" 
I mainly went in the area to go to he U.S. Consulate (you won't have the contacts) for parties and to visit the Korean grocery from time to time. You'll be very close to the Jeddah Water Fountain out in the Red Sea and the Jamjoon Mall where the k.o.p. afforded Idi Amin (I mean, he WAS a brother after all wasn't he?) asylum. It should be easy to catch a taxi being driven by someone bent on suicide.
Others can help you more. If you want to try to pick up some deals on purchases, find out how to get to the port area where they have a huge souk full of sea-bourne damaged items. Even if you don't find anything worth buying, it's interesting to walk around and look at things jes'the same. Go when it's not so hot.

Good for you. I always found compound life a bit boring. I didn't mean to insinuate that that wuz in yer interest, but it is somehing that a LOT of people seem to crave.
Personally, I didn't like the kissin' up game that American embassy/consulate folk liked to make people play to get in for a few real beers. Riyadh wuz absolutely the worst! I only went as I wuz a military subcontractor who needed to keep up his networking and, most importantly, it wuz free.

You can only say that if you have never dealt with the US embassy in Cairo. They considered any non-embassy American to be a confirmed leper... an especially low class, low caste, leper.
It was quite amazing to me...

I am a former employee of IGIT (Unofficially). In other words, after getting fired by king saud , I was desperate and these guys flew me to Jeddah twice to interview and then to move. they hired me for the remainder of the term and i worked while on my exit visa from king saud.
the housing is new and comfortable, it is comprised of 4 buildings : 2 for men, 1 for women, 1 for families which also has the igit office in it.
i think this company is fairly good as companies go. downside is you teach longer hours than the direct hires and get less pay. I received the maximum of $3,000 US a month. They lowered the salaries and are taking a heap from KAU. however, if you have little experience and want to get your foot in the door this is the way to do it. Many teachers hated it here. Many of your typical complaints but I appreciated their help. If you have enough experience then apply directly to KAU.

You are a 15 minute walk from the corniche and the us embassy is just around the corner. the beaches are a bit farther away but the previous supervisor used to get the van drivers to take us to the beach on weekends.there is a turf soccer field down the street with lights and a supermarket next to it.
An eritrean friend once told me that Ruwais didtrict is "the hood" for jeddah but it is still very pleasant, Shopping is in close proximity down filisteen st which is a major artery of jeddah.
I heard about the korean restaurant myself but dont know where it is. can anyone give directions?
one problem with IGIT is if you want to move on, they may not release you. |
