Not a rant at all Justin. A well-worded and reasoned post. The previous post, however...

Actually, I think the "level of complexity" of teaching English quite often exceeds that of pulling a tooth, Adrian. (I mean, really, you grab a pair of pliers, you open a bottle of vodka. . . what's so complicated?) But as Justin and others have said,

English teachers don't just have to know English. They have to know how to teach.

I've often referred to getting some of my more reluctant students to say anything in class in English as akin to pulling teeth! Very Happy

I never really had any teacher in my life who impressed me with their teaching skills.

Sure, a person can always strive to improve his teaching skills, but at the end of the day, he either has it or he doesn't, despite all the "pedagogical" knowledge acquired or to be acquired.

Who is/what makes a "good" teacher still is draped in some subjectivity. Being fully objective in this regard is virtually impossible.

We all like to brag up our professions and make them sound extremely difficult to the outside world. I've done the same as a translator (which is very, very difficult). Our egos can get the best of us!

Also, I agree that subject knowledge is extremely important, but no more than the ability to "clearly relay" the message (teaching skills). You have to have good dose of both, and when one is lacking, the students suffer. That's just a fact.

Yes, I can say that TESOL requirements are getting a big more strict worldwide.
