is it normal practice to receive the same hourly rate for working on the weekend as for during the week?

Depends on what your contract says.

Typically, if you are working at a language academy (not a real school) then you get the same rate if it is within your regular hours or if you are part time.

If you are a salaried employee then it should be "overtime" unless the weekend is your regularly scheduled work day.

What does your contract say and does it go over your contracted contact time.

hi
while agreeing with previous poster, the last time i looked, saturday or sunday were just another 24 hours.

if the contract has no reference to weekend work rates of pay, then my answer is that it would be regular pay rate.

best
