|
|
Been applying to schools in the inaka and a lot of them want a valid driver's license. But they said if I could get an international driver's license to start with that would be fine for a year. I was under the impression that I would have to return to my home country (the US) in order to get one, but the embassy told me I could do it here. I have a valid American driver's license. Does anyone know the procedure?
Thanks. |

well, I am not American, ..... but I did it a few years ago.
It was very easy, I sent home scanned copy of my DL and a passport photo and my mother did the rest, only cost $10~$15? but things could have changed |

Here is a link to Triple A (AAA) application form for the international driver's permit (not a license!) that you can get by mail.

I say not a license, because the IDP is in itself not a license. You get it only because you already have a valid license from your home country and must carry it along with the IDP to be legal, or your insurance is invalid. |

You're always on it Glenski! I checked this out, and you're right, when people say international driver's 'license,' it is actually a permit. Good way to get into the rigors of getting a Japanese license and fast too if you suddenly need to start driving. |
