Your original signing was merely for the purpose of allowing the school to get a work permit for you so that they could use that to get a visa notification/invitation letter from the government to send to you in order for you to obtain a z-visa.

Shortly after you arrive at your school, they will present you with two copies, each in Chinese and English and with or without addendums, of the same (?) contract for your signature. You will end up signing four copies. And the school's representative will also sign those same copies. They will give you one copy each of the Chinese version and of the English version. Be sure to look it over carefully before you sign. Again. Now you are really under contract, and so is the school.

Still waiting for invitation letter and applying for other jobs.

I cannot get over by the start date - thank goodness I did not buy a ticket - yet.

Should I try to renegotiate a start date?

I want the visa in hand before I buy a ticket.

In the meantime applying for other job!

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I wish you the best young lady, but, I think they don't want you. I could be wrong.

Quite frankly, if you do find a job within the next 2 weeks = ....?

Allow me to address the message - a 50+ year old woman is looking for a job. Who would you hire - a young stud or Julia Childs?

Sorry, this is China.

I'm ready to get going soon. The mountains of NC, LV or Hawaii seem nice.

1 more year.

Us/We??

That's funny.

Revealer - this Uni has teachers 15 to 20 years older than me - so that isn't the issue.

Sure alot of schools want youngsters - and they say it straight out in their ads.

But not all of them do.

October is a possible - we stll have 2 to 3 weeks in September - and schools in China or elsewhere can get someone there by mid to late October.

That's news to me. How do you know that?

Who told you about Freshman starting after the 10/1 holiday?

If you don't start "teaching" around 10/10, give it up.

I wonder what being a "scrub" is like? I'll never know because I'm on the team before the 1st team.

Weaker folk say "practice squad". Stronger folk say "trainers". Read and learn.

If you need any tips, send me a check, mate.

The uni I am at has military training before the holiday. This means no classes until after. Also, if they aren't able to get a teacher before classes start do you think they just drop the class? My guess would be that the class would simply start later when a teacher was found.

Very good that you hadn't bought the ticket and I hope you get your papers soon.

I wonder about cherishing being a fill-in/last minute minion.

We ignored your initial application, but, now, you'll suit our purposes.

Can you fly over tomorrow?

Patience is a virtue young lady, wait till next semester rather than get screwed now.

I sleep peacefully.

At this point in the game, why would any "reputable" school still be looking for an employee?

A less reputable FT has done a runner...

A FT's Chinese wife didn't like the surroundings and asked him to leave due to family matters.

I suppose this would be a good time to grasp a opportunity of someone not making the grade for what ever reason, example, the one fella who had the disability and the school would not continue to employ him. I am sure they had to replace the teacher at a late date. There are a lot of opportunities out there and no matter the reasons, one might succeed where others have failed.

".example, the one fella who had the disability and the school would not continue to employ him. I am sure they had to replace the teacher at a late date. There are a lot of opportunities..."

I guess I am a troll because I certainly wouldn't want to work for someone who discriminated against another simply because he/she was "different".

If they let him go, what will they pull on the new employee?

Whining and dining on their dime.

Go figure. Just making it easier to find a taxi baby!

I wonder how black people feel when an empty cab drives by and then picks up a honky just down the road?

Anyday anyone claims I'm a troll = a day they wished had never happened typograhically. Let's joust. Are you afraid to write words that bite? I'm not.

Baby crying in the background - "Oh Mommy. Someone wrote something on Dave's that upset me. I will always be our little kid, what should I do? I know, I'll hit the red ! button."

I simply write the truth as I see it. I apologize if my views don't coincide with the majority on this "free" site. Of course, Dave could ban me again for sharing my opinions on this forum open to like-minded readers. I may just join Raoul.

Old School. Talk Doc, who a bunch a people now quote via his "Middle Kingdom" life website, asked me to come over to his now defunct English teachers forum several years ago. I declined because I like Dave's.

That ain't no way to treat a lady.
You are an ill-mannered troll. A waste of blood and oxygen.

FWIW, my university also has freshmen starting around October 1st, after their military training. I hope the other FT arrives in time. =]
Take it easy, Sandy. It will happen. I wish the timing were better suited for you. But, let it be.
As far as jousting, go for it. I'm busy and happy teaching here, so I'll visit this website in a few weeks. Maybe I'll read your reply. Probably not. But you knock yourself out.
Thanks again to all the helpful people on this site. I'm in Tianjin, and I think it rocks. All things considered.

I'm not sure who this "Revealer" is, but do think he has made some valid points on this thread as well as provided a lot more useful information to the readers of Dave's on other threads, along with some pointed commentary, than some of those who have attacked him.

It certainly does appear to me that there is a sort of group think that takes place on Dave's. A lot like China! I've noticed over the past year or so that I've read Dave's, some people write things that most others do not agree with and then they cease to be heard from again. Perhaps it is the red ! button?

As for Sandy's predicament, I noticed that "The Revealer" provided her some, in fact more, positive info than Guericotti or most others. With all due respect, Guericotti did tell her to be patient. It seems she has beeen since the Fall of 2007!

Planning on being in Taiwan in Fall 2008 - teaching in the public schools - - most people are placed in rural areas.

We can indicate preferences for location - I am thinking the north would be better.

I have BS in Elementary Ed. and various teaching experience.

I am 50 and female (will be 51 by the time I get there).

I have been researching for a long time about this - so know it will be a big change - but one I am ready for.

Any positive information is going to be helpful at this point in time.

I am going to get my international driving license before coming over.

I want to get a motorcyle license - but cannot because my state is so rescrictive on getting one - long complicated process.

Thanks everyone.

It appears that she'll be 53 when and if she arrives. I wish her the best, but don't find any fault with what The Revealer wrote. The way I read his words is that discrimination does exist in China and that he wouldn't want to work for such a school. Guericotti lamely tried to misquote The Revealer.

Sure, The Revealer asked - who would you hire, a young stud or a 50 year old lady? I don't see that as advocating discrimination. He/she also typed that they wouldn't want to work for a school that reneged on a deal with someone after they discovered that the person had a handicap. I'd say that The Revealer is a person who types what others won't out of fear of creating waves. Exclamation

In regards to the bend over comments he made, I think he was just being sarcastic. But, I understand and agree with his sentiments. The way I see his situation is - his employer gave his number to a student who wanted free English lessons. He said No. That person then claimed he was drunk and rude.

Another way of looking at is like this - imagine you need a job and walk into a store even though they weren't advertising any positions. When the store says sorry we're not hiring, you tell them their store is terrible and the owner/you are rude for not giving them a job. What would you do/feel if you owned the store? The gall of some people!

Besides the above, I agree with The Revealer when he typed a few weeks ago that you can't believe everything you read. According to the contribution above, written in 2007, Sandy is 53 years old now. Earlier in this thread, in response to The Revealers general query pertaining to who would you hire, Sandy responded that the school that she is patiently waiting for the Invitation Letter from, and according to other contributions she has made in other threads she's been doing so for more than a month, has teachers 15 to 20 years older than her!

53 + 15/20 = 68 or 73 year old foreign teachers. Sorry, I don't buy it.

My brother lives in Charlotte and has had a motorcycle for 10+ years.

I do hope that Sandy receives her letter and comes to China soon and begins teaching in October. As The Revealer originally mentioned to her, a lot of schools have Freshman classes begin after the National Day holiday.

"China Rocks!"

Keep it up Mr. Revealer. Some of us love you. Thanks for typing what I was feeling.

Troll, have you even spent a day in China? Almost everyone hired here has been employed on the basis of discrimination-and their renumeration reflects this(the younger/more caucasian you are, the more likely you are to receive a more enticing job offer). So, if you dont wish to work for someone who discriminates, you dont want to work here. Which you probably havent anyways....
I notice its not the "N" word, but black people, and not white people, but "honky". Many here would find that word offensive. Also, word of advice-China isnt the place for white people who wish to be black, such as yourself. Check out Lagos.
