Quick question, as I pack: I have a bunch of prescription meds that I need, and was wondering if I have to bring them with me in my carry on- to "declare" going through security; or can I just pack them in my suitcase? I have a letter from my doctor, explaining the prescriptions and stuff, but was just wondering if I needed to show them all this up front; or just have the letter ready should I get hauled through customs and checked? Any advice on this one? It's not a ton of meds, and nothing illegal, but definitely prescription- not over the counter stuff. Thanks for the input.

JMHO... Leave it in your suitcase with the letter from your doctor. I always carried various vitamins and such and no one ever looked. Even if they do, the letter should cover it.

The only possible problem would be anything with a narcotic... like codeine or any habit forming stuff. I do believe that there are websites that tell you what medications are banned there... should come up in a google.

I wouldn't take too much along. Most stuff is easily available in the UAE without a prescription for a fraction of the price. (if you are American and used to our prices) Laughing

Thanks for the advice. I will pack it in my suitcase, and hope for the best. First order of duty upon arrival is getting a doctor and a referral for a neurologist. I only have 1 month supply of meds, and that will go quickly. Unfortunately every med I need is banned in the UAE. Lovely. So, I have to use alternatives, which are not as effective. I'm curious to see what the doctors there prescribe for my conditions. Just another part of the adventure....
Thanks again.

I would take your current meds to the largest local pharmacy once you get there, and talk to the head pharmacist. Even check with a couple to get different opinions. I found them very knowledgeable and many use them as doctors. They will tell you what is most similar and suggest a good doctor if you need more assistance. Often there are meds that are approved in Europe that are better than what has been approved in the US (and likely vice-versa) while the Gulf tends to have meds from all over.

I have emailed the Ministry of Health, as well as UAEU (where I will be working as of Sept. 19), but have not had an answer to a question. I am trying to learn whether a particular homeopathic product would be allowed into the UAE. It is called Rescue Remedy by Dr. Bach. It is made from essences of flowers, but has 27% grape-based brandy as a preservative. Here is a link to the product and some articles:
<http://www.bachflower.com/Articles.htm>. I do have it listed in the letter from my doctor listing a prescription med I use and vitamins. Thank you!

Since alcohol, including wine, is allowed in the UAE, I don't see why not.

Thanks, VS! I thought because non-muslims need an alcohol license to have alcohol, and on arrival I would not yet have a license, I might have a problem bringing in the Rescue Remedy.

Don't worry about it - in fact, stock up on beer, wine and spirits (if you imbibe) at the Dubai Duty free on arrival - customs won't even blink. Smile
