How can we see what XE's rates are? GoLloyds displays their rates right on their webpage but I can only find the market rates on XE.com

I'm not sure you can. Xe.com rates float, whereas Lloyd's set their daily.

Checking my account just now the mid market rate is 84.4709. At the same instant, they are actively quoting me 86.0344 on an actual transfer, which makes for a 1.5635 yen margin at their end.

Personally, I don't care what their margin is. I only care what their actual rate is and what the fees are: if it's lower than anyone else then they're cheaper to you on the conversion. EOS.

Lloyd's is quoting 85.34 right now, but their fees are higher.

If you're sending larger amounts and know the number of banks that will take a share & how much, then Llyod's becomes better for large amounts. For lower level amounts and their fixed costs, xe.com is going to be the better bet. If the xe.com rate is beating Llyod's at any given point (& IME it usually does) then they're simply the better option outright.

To anyone who has sent a payment from Japan to XE, how long does it usually take to show as received on your account?

I sent the payment 2 days ago (Thursday) and sent the email with the details on the same day. Not received any reply yet and in my account it still says "Created - payment not received".

It takes a day or two for them to email me saying that they've sent the funds and then another day or two for the funds to show up in my account back in Canada.

Lloyds may or may not cost more, I don't know at this point, but their process sure seems more user friendly and easier to handle than the transfer involved for XE.com.

Still, I intend to follow this thread with the hope of seeing more concrete information on which is actually cheaper.

I called XE and they confirmed they had definitely received no payment, so I just went to the bank with all the paperwork and details I had and tried to tell them it had failed in Japanese.

After literally about 50 minutes of broken english/japanese and a few phonecalls to bank of america on my behalf the woman in the bank gave me some form to fill in and basically told me exactly what to write in each box. I'm not sure what the form is, but then she stapled it to my original ATM furikomi receipt, restamped it with todays date and gave it back to me. I assume the payment has been sent again but I'm not quite sure, she was gesturing something to do with my inkan and coming back?

Anyway, can anyone tell me what this form is? I'm hoping its just a form to send the payment again...? This is hard work!

Cheers!

Rezz,

I also had problems sending money from my bank account (postal account) to Xe.com. I tried around twice, then gave up and went to a local bank (which I didn't have an account for) since I was already past the 3-day deadline that Xe.com gave. I hear ya, Xe.com is tricky and it's scary not knowing where exactly your money is going!

I tried asking what that form was to two Japanese people but both of them didn't know... my guess is that it's a form that either tries to send the money back to your account, OR it tries to resend the money to the proper place (but I think the former is more likely than the latter). The form does say 内容変更 (= changing content information) though, so it might be clarifying the destination so that it actually sends to Xe.com. That's just my guess tho...

Well the good news is the form did the trick, xe received my payment yesterday.

However it was so difficult I'm very tempted to sign up with golloyds and see if they are any easier. Having to go to the bank every time I want to send money home and try filling in those forms is a bit too much effort tbh! Shocked

Cheers for all the help tho chaps.

At least be up front about it: your problems were because you can't operate in Japanese when in Japan. Nothing to do with xe.com. Crying or Very sad

Haha, I would, but the ATM for my bank doesnt ask for enough detail. I definitely chose all the right options and put in the information it asked of me, but the account type you have to transfer to has to be specified as a business current account and unfortunately it seems impossible to specify from the ATM alone.

But yeah the language barrier definitely doesn't help!

I filled out the online application form for LLoyds now.
They asked me what other document besides a copy of my passport I'd prefer to send, so I chose health insurance certificate.
On the actual printed application form it now says I (as foreigner) have to send copy of passport and driver's license or gaijin card, but nothing about health insurance. The option health insurance is only written in Japanese, not in English, so I suppose that this is an option only for Japanese nationals?
They told me to print out the form, sign and send my passport and health insurance certificate copies, but the form says not to do so.

Should I send three documents (health insurance, passport and gaijin card copies) just in case??

I sent my application to Lloyds over 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard back from them at all.
For those of you who applied, is it normal that it takes THAT long or should I contact them and ask what happened to my application?

Meanwhile the EURO got stronger (from 106 up to 118) so I'm not sure if I'm going to send any moeny anymore.

I have been waiting about 10 days or so...
