Hello all,

I worked my first teaching gig in Turkey this summer, in a private school in the small town of �nye, Ordu, in the Black Sea area.

Instead of paying me for my last two weeks of work, I was given two things my employer called "senet." He said they're like checks.

The trouble is, I don't have a Turkish bank account, my boss never got me a work visa like the contract said, and I feel like I'm in over my head. Does anyone know of a good bank, where they might speak a bit of English? Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

I�m not a lawyer or an accountant but as far as I know a senet is a promise to pay. For example, I have signed 10 senets, one for each of the next 10 months, promising to pay my daughter's dersane a certain amount on a specific day. The wording, more or less, is a promise to pay the dersane an amount on a certain date, and agreeing the matter can be taken to the local small claims court in the event of non-payment. Senets are legally binding but do not have the same status as cheques. What is the date on the senet when this guy promises to pay you? And did he sign it?

The senets are dated Sept. 20 and 28th, and yes they are signed- by the head of the school. I am a little concerned- I don't have a Turkish bank account, and I don't know what happens if the senets bounce.

The senet is nothing to do with a bank, it is a promise to pay. You present the senet on the day it says and he is supposed to give you the cash.

Ok, I'm a bit confused. My (ex) employer said I needed to take them to a bank- that they functioned like checks. Do I need to trek back and see my former employer in order to be paid? What would happen if I present them at a bank?

Does the senet show info like the bank and account number that will give you the money?
