Vlad, correct me if I've misunderstood but are you saying that you are paying for the telephone interview? How does that work exactly?
The employer covers interview expenses.
Surely they're calling you (via Skype)?
This seems like a Moscow langauge school through and through. If you don't say anything about it, they'll happily take advantage. I'd insist on any expenses being reimbursed. |
A $14 investment is no big deal. I spent $40 printing a professional portfolio recently for a job I was pretty confident I did not have a chance at getting... |

I definitely screwed up on the grammar questions. I think I did well on everything else. My biggest concern was not my mistakes on the grammar, but my forgetting to point out I know my grammar knowledge is poor, but that I am a fast and independent learner.
This waiting to hear back is going to kill me!
(EDIT: Remember this was for the CELTA program, not a job). |

well, it is pretty typical of schools here to expect you to foot expenses for interviews and such like.
so is it for the celta that means you are contracted to them for a year? or is it just a celta on its own and you're paying for it?
because if it is the latter, then you have got in. |

Actually, the CELTA course is more discerning than BKC when it comes to taking on trainees. So nothing is definite there yet. However, if you got to the phone interview stage, you are probably on the course. They are usually just confirming level of English, accent, general demeanour etc., inasmuch as that can be done over the phone.
Don't fret about screwing up the grammar questions too much. You are not the only potential trainee to do so. But obviously, this will be an area to work on...
Good luck |

I made it! They included a somewhat lengthy "written warning" about my grammar ability. Now I have to make sure I want to do it. I mean, I definitely want to, just have to make that commitment. My job just started getting good too. But I feel like there is no reason NOT to do it.
I will have to shoot them an e-mail as the one question I forgot to ask about was job placement. I know January is not supposed to be the hot time for hiring (well it will be mid February I think when I complete the CELTA). |

Congrats!
Now hit the books. Hard. Learn the tenses. The names for them. The forms. What they mean and how they are used.
Re job placement. This is not usually part of a CELTA course, but BKC usually cherry-picks the best trainees to work for them. After New Year is a good time, in fact, as there are usually extra vacancies due to fleeing teachers!
Good luck. |

Congrats! I had some classmates who also received a 'warning' about their grammar but passed. Stay calm & study hard! You'll be fine! Good luck! |

I've been digging into this site a bit lately. Thanks for posting the steps you took Vlad. I should know November 1 or 2 if I made it into the January course. I doubt I'll work there after Graduation, but I'm serious about a career in TEFL so CELTA is the way to go. Vlad, do you recall any specific grammar topics from your interview?
Thanks in general to all the Veterans for sharing here too. While I had already decided on the FSU for personal reasons, the horror stories replaced some of the excitement with trepidation. I am a very optimistic, and outgoing person. The harsher light on the field has just served to make me more curious, albeit informed. |
